A real move towards peace would not be possible while Israel continues blockading food and fuel supplies to the Gaza Strip, and Palestine carries out almost daily rocket attacks on Israeli border regions, Lavrov was quoted by the RIA Novosti news agency as saying during a telephone conference of the Middle East Quartet of mediators -- the United States, Russia, the UN and the European Union.

As a Russian armored personnel carrier rumbled slowly through an Albanian village, the children on the street shouted and made mocking V-signs at them, for the Albanians' victory over the Serbs, Russia's fellow Slavs. The soldiers looked down at them, their faces blank.

''The children shout, 'Russia kaput!' and more when we drive through the nearby village,'' Lieutenant Kharitonov said. ''We know it is because the adults say it at home, and they hear it and repeat it.''

During the cold war russian troops/support was all over the globe. When the USSR collapsed so did funding for the army. Russia under yeltsin was weak, but now with putin the army is getting more funding, but it will be some time (if everything goes well for them) before russia will get more involved in global conflicts.

For now russia is only flying "patrols" north of scandinavia and across the baltic to the UK and back.
