Castles and Other Palaces of Poland

After an astounding success of this thread I decided to widen the perspective and take a look at palaces in Poland. I hope you will enjoy it as much as the castle thread. Thank you for contributing.

There are a few palaces in Poland but the greatest palace is located in Wilanów, Warsaw, the residence of Polish kings! en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wilan%C3%B3w_Palace

The one in Walewice is very stately as well.

And in true aristocratic fashion carries with it a Napoleonic scandal which resulted in a bastard child for the: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marie_Walewska - Countess Walewska

Wow! I didn`t know it happened there though Napoleon and Walewska is a known story here. Belongs to Polish pop culture!

From what I read she became pregnant in Vienna but had the child in Walewice.

I thought it was nice to have what seems to be happy ending whereby the offspring from the affair Alexandre Joseph "was legalised by the old count Athenasius and thus bore the name of the counts of Colonna-Walewski."

Rogalin

Rogalin is primarily famous for its 18th-century baroque palace of the Raczyński family, and the adjacent Raczyński Art Gallery, housing a permanent exhibition of Polish and international paintings (including Paul Delaroche and Claude Monet and the famous Jan Matejko's large-scale painting Joanna d'Arc, see a fragment below). The gallery was started by Edward Aleksander Raczyński. Rogalin is also known for its putatively 1000-year-old oak trees (Polish: Dęby Rogalińskie) on the banks of the Warta.

Amazing piece of architecture and incredible reconstruction work . Very nice .

One advantage of comunism in Poland was that such castles became national treasures opened to everyone and serving to all people as museums, not just wealthy prince and his family . Nationalization in this sector was a boon for the people and the art itself.

This video series, presented by art historian prof. Stanisław Nicieja, were produced by TVP3 Rzeszów. Very interesting, though sadly, content is low-def at 240p.

I visited Olesko in 2005 when travelling from Lwów to Równe on my way to osada Hallerowo, where our maternal grandparents lived until 10 February 1940.

Here's the program about Olesko and Podhorce, At the time, I wasn't aware that Podhorce was only 10 km away. Woulda gone there as well. Only a small part of the interior of Olesko was open when we stopped there, but the church across the highway was open. There was a small apple orchard near the church and several Ukrainian women were selling bruised and rotting apples that they had collected under the trees. We just gave them money and didn't take the apples.

Thank you to all that have entered information, and especially pictures here. I am currently reading 'POLAND' by Michener and there is so much information about the palaces and castles .. it certainly helps to be able to see many of them and imagine what the others must have looked like. So beautiful. Was never a place on my list to visit, but now is! Thank you!

I was really stunned with this castle breathtaking history.The place is absolutely amazing, it can't be missed by anyone who wants to see the real beauty of the past. I am totally sure that this is one of the most memorable and fascinating historic landmarks in Poland.

Falkenburg as was. The castle itself is nice to visit but not anything remarkable. Fairly well preserved though and lived in until 1945. The real beauty is in the combination of the castle and its location.

Worth a visit if you happen to be near.

The Poles can't stand any reminders of their german past and renamed it to "Malbork".
They did alot of renaming after '18 and '45.

The Germans can't stand any reminders of their slavic past and renamed many "german cities" like Lipsko (now Leipzig).Dresden,
Drezno, górnołuż. Drježdźany, czes. Drážïany, dawniej Drezdno (now germ.. Dresden) etc etc etc.

They did alot of renaming after XII century.

Given history, it's understandable why, but a bit of a shame when history is erased in that way. They even renamed Polnischer Neustadt into Prudnik. Here's a picture of Niemodlin/Falkenburg. And another of Prudnik Castle

Dear Jon235, Polnischer Neustadt can be translated as Polish Newcity (newtown), not German, and this is probably what you are not able to undersrtand
unfortunately. So it was natural to change the name of the city.
The Jews for example did a lot of renaming in the Middle East

I wonder why you think that. No need to rename the castle and town (or anywhere else at all).


No it wasn't. It was nationalistic and that is never 'natural'. It also insults the history of the castle.

Krzyżtopór (CrossAxe) defensive palace functioned for a few years only, ruined by invading troops in 17 century, never rebuilt, though now plans exist.

The film also shows Teutonic Marlbork Castle in 1945. Compare then and today. Poles have preserved it very well.

Yep, I've yet to visit Moszna and Książ castles, they're the ones I really want to see :)

That is the thing about Poland, just when you think you have seen it all, something else comes up......

Yes, in 2007.

I read rumours about the plan to restore the place.
Crossaxe or Crossbattleaxe.

From what I heard they won't restore it because it was never finished. The Swedes and Russians destroyed it even more, so now they are just protecting what is left.
