Living in a big city, despite its multiple unnerving drawbacks, which irritate me substantially, has some pros too. In major cultural centres like Krakow, Warsaw, Poznan or Wrocław events take place every day, even a few on the same day so you can easily choose the best ones or try to attend all.

Every year there is Insect Exhibition, always in June. You can touch, buy, talk about insects and carnivorous plants. Buy professional stuff and books. Body painting, contests make it a good offer for kids, too.

Last Saturday they also fried and ate insects.

Some of my photos:

Good thread Pawian,

Two big ones this month are:

Wianka (wiki)is another date on krakow's "must see" calendar 25 June.
Here is something about last year's one: Lenny Kravitz will perform at Krakow's Wianki FOR FREE (updated 2010)

Official Website here (in English)
"Dating back to Pagan times, Wianki (meaning 'wreaths') celebrates all the usual midsummer themes of life, renewal and, er, virginity. Unsurprisingly, it was rebranded "Noc Świętojańska" (St. John's Night) by the early Church, which, no doubt, toned down some of the more earthy practices such as young lovers consummating their love in nearby woods. However, some elements have remained, such as jumping over the huge ceremonial bonfires (sobotka) which are lit along the riverbank and, of course, young women casting their wreaths upon the river.
Traditionally, Polish girls wear wreaths of flowers and throw them into the river. According to folklore, if the wreath comes back to shore, the girl will never marry, if it sinks, she will die young and if it flows down the river, she will be married. Oh, if only modern dating was so easy! Fortunately for all, the Wistula is a fast-flowing river and, traditionally, most girls went away happy.
Back in the 16th Century, Jan Kochanowski wrote the following description of Wianki traditions and beliefs:
In Poland the Eve of St. John's is fraught with miracles and magic. Animals talk to each other with human voices. The earth shows the enchanted riches … plants take on magical properties ... Wreaths to which are fixed lighted candles are cast in the waters … From the course and fate of the wreaths auguries of marriage are made. The special promise of St. John is youth, love and general fertility."

John Marshall 2009

And Festival of Jewish Culture in Krakow 2009, 2010 is also a great festival this month, definitely worth a visit .

Good. I must admit I went to Wianki once, in 1990s, as a newly wed husband, and stopped after kids started appearing. We can only hear fireworks at night.

We prefer going to Air Picnic in Krakow, also in June. It is not only plane acrobatics, but also historical reconstructions, vintage cars, funfair for kids, paintball, modern Polish army or police presentations, NATO exhibitions etc. Here are only a few pics from a few hundred:

Yes. Yes.

Unfortunately, there is a mess with new regulations and the picnic was cancelled for this year. Pity.

But, my son was there on a school trip, and I peeked through the windows, there is the same exhibition which was displayed in old buildings, so don`t get too excited. :(

oops, we can kiss goodbye to air picnics with real planes in Krakow. Today there was another crash at the Air Show in Płock.

Seems there was some black smoke coming from it as well as the white smoke for the display....

could well be an engine failure...?

No,not "regulations".....see those "bullets " in your kids hands? in the UK we have to go round and police all those up these days just incase.......not sure in case of what with expanded blank bullets, but rulz iz rulz.....
Great photos all in all, shame though there seems to be that inbalance...why do nazi's always seem to outnumber other historical displays 8 to 1 ?

edit, oops, had not read all the way down :(
yes,saw to definate flashes there, one before he went into the last loop and one on the way down......but,TBH,looked more like he greyed out for a second and mis judged altitude. Hopefully it was quick.

We went for the first time. We are not fascinated by dogs, we prefer cats. And the outfits on those poor animals were really disgusting.

We prefered Honey Fair much more.

Which one? There are a few because Poland isn`t so homogenous as one may think:

I still think it is outrageous to dress dogs like that.

No wonder I don`t like dogs. No only do they smell awful, they also allow humans to do everything with them.
Shame on dogs, slaves of the human race. Where is their dignity?

I was referring to the one shown last, in the first set of dog pics. I like the black velvet vest the doggy is wearing, with embroidered flowers.

The dog with surgical mask is a bit too much. I hope he was able to breathe.

A sincere thanks PF, for putting up with me FIVE terrific years, muah!

Just come back, visited 5 sites within 3 hours, including 2 I hadn`t seen before. Took photos at will, even in no-photo rooms.

The 8th Equality Parade sparked some emotions as usual. Right wingers tried to disturb the gay demonstration, the police had to take action.
