Cheating in Poland - overestimated railway mileage

This happens, for example, on the Warszawa Wschodnia - Skierniewice distance where you pay for 71 km, whereas in reality the distance is only 69,7 km. The reason for that? "Moving" the passanger from the lower class of tariff [61-70 km] to a higher one [71-80] within which the ticket costs 15,40 zł instead of 13,80 zł.

This practice was challenged in June 2006 by the UOKiK which asked the Ministry of Transport to make an investigation to the matter. Since then the Ministry and its affiliate, Urząd Transportu Kolejowego, have done nothing to solve the problem, though they had solemnly promised to do so.

The record abuse in counting the mileage can be seen on the Częstochowa - Częstochowa Stradom distance where it is estimated almost twice its real range, 5 km instead of 2,6 km. Short distances that are wrong may sum up; the distance between Warszawa and Szczecin is said to be 525 km, 7 km more beyond the real figure of 518 km.
