Our son is marrying his Polish girlfriend in July, and we'd like to travel from Portsmouth to Gdynia by ferry in May to meet the in-laws. What route is do-able?

thanks in advance for all help!

Peter

You're not going to do anything close to that route.

Best bet would be Dover-Dunkerque by ferry, then it's almost a straight drive to Berlin. From Berlin, there's motorway to Szczecin and then a tediously long drag to Gdansk from there.

If money is no object, then you could do Harwich-Esbjerg on the ferry, drive across Denmark and Sweden to Karlskrona, from where you can reach Gdynia.

Straight up the M3 to Heathrow is going to be your best bet.

Perhaps he doesnt wnat to fly for whatever reason, i think you could sail to a Baltic country Norway for example and then onto Gdansk/Gdynia.

Not any more. Best he could do would be Harwich to Esbjerg (Denmark) and then it's either drive to Berlin (which is fine) and then on to Gdynia (which sucks) or drive to west coast of Denmark and ferry to Varberg before driving to Karlskrona or just drive there, and then a ferry to Gdynia.

Aren't there ferries from north england to sweden/ estonia? Just a trip across to gdansk then.

These guys suggest via amsterdam http://www.dfdsseaways.co.uk/Ferry_Crossings/Newcastle_Amsterdam/Ferry _to_Holland?tduid=925d0dc6b291ff3c46b4a4a30e8f31c6

Not a sausage, there may be freight ferries (though a quick search says no) - but the nearest thing to a UK-Scandinavia service these days is Harwich-Esbjerg. You'd then have to drive across Denmark and Sweden and then ferry from there to Poland.

There's an interesting alternative in Rostock-Gdynia, but it hardly seems worth it.

No point, he's in Portsmouth. There's also the Harwich-Hoek van Holland service which might make sense - Portsmouth to Harwich is a straight run, instead of crawling across the south coast.

Do Dover to Dunkirk and then its a flat out drive through europe, Should take no more than 16 hours, Aim to travel through europe on a Sunday to avoid traffic, I've done it more times than I can remember and its a really easy drive. You could even do Portsmouth to Cherbourg and then drive through france if you want to avoid the dreaded a303.

I did this several years ago, and for me at the time the best was to book a cabin on the overnight from Harwich to Hoek, it arrives in Hoek at 7 am and then it's an easy drive to Gdynia (less than a day)..

Maybe look at this link http://www.directferries.co.uk/poland.htm for second stage of journey. See the places you board at and then look for an operator that sails direct from UK?

One example is to take a train or boat to Copenhagen and then the ferry to Poland.

e.g.http://www.seat61.com/Denmark.htm

If you google the other boarding points for stage 2 of your journey then you should get similar helpful information.

Edit.. 2 more useful links.

Safe journey :)

Copenhagen and then the ferry to Poland.

That might be a good way.

An alternative would be to drive to Lincolnshire, Immingham to be exact, and sail to Gdynia. I couldn't find a quick link from google, but it is certainly possible. Not cheap though.
