No warnings to soccer fans going to Euro 2012 about Polish drivers and Polish roads?

All this talk about Polish ultras and hooligans, but nothing about the madness of Polish drivers, the sh1t roads, inadequate lights and road signs etc

Should BBC not be warning their law abiding drivers about Polish drivers. Maybe, a Panorama documentary called the "the imaginary third lane".The chances of people getting killed on the roads are far greater than that of getting beatin to death by racist thugs.

"the imaginary third lane"

Like the humour Milky - LMAO

I watched the Panoramo doc " Stadiums of Hate " anyone who lives in Poland knows this goes on at certain fixtures. The unfortunate point is your normal Brit, who has never been to Poland or the Ukraine will be frightened away, this is not good for the Polish travel industry, Euro 2012 is stage to showcase Poland and its natural beauty, wonderful culture and Gastronomy ( especially the beer).

I am going to Poznan for the match on Sunday and I am sure the 30,000+ Irish fans won't give two hoots about " Stadiums of Hate" most of the Polish hools in Poznan will be too busy working, earning a buck and catering to the Party, which will go on well into the morning especially if its a victory.

Stadiums of Hate

A lot of anger about Poles in England from the little englanders. I think BBC were cashing in on this tabloid mentality with their "stadium of hate".

It's funny the logic of the illogical. I met an Irish friend(neighbor,so not friend by choice) the other day, and he is unashamedly racist and homophobic;he had seen the infamous documentary and he was outraged at how the Poles were such a "nation of racist". lol The moral high-ground of the kettle calling the pot black.

I agree this documentary will be forgotten all ready, but the roads, the roads, the drivers eh??

I hardly see thousands of UK fans coming over here in their cars and most likely they will stay in the city that their team is playing getting drunk therefore rendering them useless to drive anyway.

Considering that we had some Irish guests travel from warsaw to Olsztyn on a bus and swore they'd only travel back by train, I think it is. Some people will be coming by car and, under the impression people drive on the right-hand side in Poland, will be unprepared for the Audi SUVs they'll meet driving on the left hand side towards them.

getting drunk therefore rendering them useless to drive anyway.

In Poland that is sometimes a pre-requisite for getting behind the wheel. It can be so scary driving in Poland that you have to be drunk before you have the courage!

There are many who have hired camper vans from Germany and Holland, so Milky's comment is relevant.

There will be in excess of 30,000+ Irish fans in Poznan on Sunday many are driving into Poland.

The English is another story, who in their right mind would want to drive into the Ukraine.

lol Yeah I did actually think about that as I posted but thought it was too confrontational :)

I still don't see a point for a sensationalised panorama programme about driving in Poland - after all the last one did enough damage.

Nor I, I disagree with sensationalist finger pointing documentaries as I said "kettle calling the pot black". but!! if, "tabloid England" are going to make them anyway ,why not make one that is less "pie in the sky", and one that may actually say lives.

Is it relevant?

yes,but not a priority.

Nope, don't see the English or Irish driving here.

Not going to survive the Journey through France/Holland/Germany are they?

The reality is that the British government has long warned about Polish roads and drivers. The FCO website giving travel advice about Poland currently says the following:

Driving on Polish roads can be hazardous. Poland is a major east-west transit route for heavy vehicles. There are few dual carriageways and even main roads between major towns and cities can be narrow and are often poorly surfaced. Streetlights, even in major cities, are weak. You must drive with your headlights on at all times. Local driving standards are poor: speed limits, traffic lights and road signs are often ignored and drivers rarely indicate before manoeuvring. Slow moving agricultural vehicles (and horse drawn vehicles) are common in rural areas, even on main roads.

In 2010 there were 3,907 road deaths in Poland (source: DfT). This equates to 10.2 road deaths per 100,000 of population and compares to the UK average of 3.1 road deaths per 100,000 of population in 2010.

Off course the info will be on the FCO website but the average Jock only uses the net for prn.

Re. the atrocious driving. A few will no doubt be going to Kiev by car, but a bigger danger is crossing the road. Both from crazy Polish drivers and from the police nabbing people for crossing a road when the light is red, even if there's no traffic. I suspect the police wil turn a blind eye during the Euros.

Not sure what you mean by wonderful Polish gastronomy though! Factory sausage, frozen chips, bland mustard, gherkins and gassy chemical beer?

Don`t be silly.
No need to issue any stupid warnings.
When I see a foreign car, I stop and let it go. And most Poles behave like that because it is our traditional Polish hospitality. It is in our genes.

PS. OK, one warning might come in handy. It should look like that: Don`t try to immitate the Polish style of driving. It is the road to hell.

drivers rarely indicate before manoeuvring.

It is a lie. Most drivers indicate, a few don`t.

Good point Jon. The BBC really should have shown a documentary about the dangers of drinking mainstream shiite Polish beers (especially as so much cracking stuff can be had with just a little effort).

Pawian, I agree with Milky. Signaling is not the norm. And a half a blink as you whip out into oncoming traffic doesn't count :P

Speaking of not warning tourists I wonder how many got caught out by the holiday today. You'd think during this time they'd open anyway as A. They are losing a lot of business and B. It inconveniences all the people from out of town who didn't know to plan ahead.

So, not Carling Black Label, then?

You should come up to Warmia-Mazury, No football in Olsztyn, but some bloody good local beers.

hmmm, never yet met a confrontational Polish driver.

I have. Unfortunately, I'm related to one. :0

An uncle once picked me up from Radom railway station, and it was only about two minutes after we had left the station that he launched into a fist-waving, minute-long tirade of the usual Polish expletives (and a lot more), just because someone had got a bit too close to his car. He would be lucky to survive if he had tried that sort of thing round here!

He's so laid-back at home, too :)

This is why I'll be in Krakow all next week - no football to spoil my holiday :)

Poland has some fantastic beers, If my memory is correct there is also a thread on PF regarding peoples appreciation of Polish beers. Polish gastronomy, there are many local regional dishes to choose from in Poland, this subject has also been discussed to death on PF.

The England team doesn't have any matches in Poland, however travel agents reported (before the Panorama documentary) that far fewer than expected are going to Ukraine.

England may not have any matches in Poland, although the Republic of Ireland do and have a very large following of Scots especially the ones that wear green and white, they still are British but maybe not for long. I believe you will find many English fans using Poland as a base camp and travel into the Ukraine for the Match only.

however travel agents reported (before the Panorama documentary) that far fewer than expected are going to Ukraine.

That will change if England get to the semi final, at which point Warsaw will become " Little England "

This is why I'll be in Krakow all next week - no football to spoil my holiday :)

Krakow next week NO football. Maybe no matches in Krak I think you will be shocked at the numbers of fans staying in the city.

looks like the Monaghan boys are prepared for the cold Polish winter night of June.
There shall be some stories on Irish radio, from Irish camper van jocks who survive to tell the tale. Plenty of warning on RTE, ah good old RTE zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Well, as it's only costing me 10% of the price of a stay in Warszawa, I think I can deal with a few English idiots ;)

However, considering the huge number of rooms still available, I don't think I'll be too "shocked" - I know what to expect from certain English visitors to Krakow, anyway.

There are indeed some fantastic beers, but you have to look for them. The football fans however will mostly be getting **** like Zywiec and Tyskie from pumps and in plastic glasses. As for the regional dishes - there are some good ones like bogracz down in the south, but I suspect most of those delights will escape the fans. If Scots come, worth remembering that there aren't actually that many compared to the English.

There is an estimated 30,000+ irish fans turning up to Poland, I would guesstimate 15/20 % of them are Northern Ireland or Scots so that would be 4,500-6,000 British passport holders supporting R o I. That is more than will be supporting England in the Ukraine, makes you think ehhhhh.

Terrible idea, imagine how many Brits would have come over had England been playing any matches in Poland. Ukraine is just so uninviting unless youre Wildrover with an internet connection of course.
