dtaylor: Carp yes do taste not so good, they are quite fleshy, but their flesh does taste rotten compared with over fresh water fish. There is a reason why Trout and Salmon are more highly valued.
I know that carp is treated as water rubbish in America. I have run into such opinions in other forums.
But Poland is different. We regularly eat all kinds of fish in our family, and frankly, if I have a choice of carp or salmon or trout, I will certainly choose carp. And the price of those fish is almost identical in Poland, with carp between cheaper trout and more expensive salmon.

That`s quite correct. It has to do with the intent of preserving the freshness of the fish, although not with God in mind. The tradition of keeping fish in the bath was strengthened in comunist times when, due to disorganised supplies or simple shortage, there were sometimes problems with getting fish for Christmas Eve. E.g., I still remember that one year a few of my class mates didn`t come to school because they had been standing in a line to the fish store till late evening or even early morning hours. Their parents told them to.
So, being a child of communism, eternally oppressed with such memories, I prefer to get my fish a day before Eve to avoid any unexpected surprises. Fish is in my bath and I feel sort of secure.

Yes. I was amused to see them like that because normally pickles are in jars or even small wooden barrels.
