Why do small minded people who do not originate from that country immediately USE the racist card?
You had to spend 30 minutes at a security check point! Well in today’s climate where there are anarchist trying to cause mayhem worldwide. You should thank security personnel, who do not have an easy job but still try to do there duty to the best of there ability.
I am not racist nor do I like any one else who is but I also do not like people who use the racist card for no other reason than to unfairly benefit there cause

GET A LIFE

Next time when you are held up 3 hours, do share with us how grateful you are that the passport control officer does it to save the world.

Can you please list the possible unfair benefis I have tried to obtain by playing the race card? Or rather, is it that accusing use of race card is even easier than playing the race card itself?

To someone who doesn't even know what THERE means, what can you expect? I wouldn't even bother to tell you to get a life.

I was held for 3 hours in Poland, Warsaw airport, when leaving the country. I'm Polish. The cops were Polish too.

Vast majority of non whites crossing into the US are held longer and checked more thoroughly at the USborder, at least at Lewiston Bridge (Ontario). In three yars that I commuted to Buffalo, NY I was taught one thing - do not line up behind the car with non-whites, unless you want to wait forever to cross the border.

Would that be connected to your 'bad-boy' past as a Solidarnosc street-fighter?

Strangely it wouldn't.

It was connected with my notes which were all in English and which the cops could not understand, so they called for a translator. The subject of the notes was early Puritan literature and Jazz age in America. They had to do with the invitation I received from one of the big fish in Vanderbilt English Department.
He is Jewish.

I think I can shed some light on this and it's got nothing to do with with racism - it's a combination of boredom coupled with these airport security staff in Gdansk having small lives who get paid very little and have no power outside of their place of work. And let's face it, they're just a glorified bouncers. So they pick on everyone and anyone regardless of colour just to make themselves feel important. I've flown in and out of Gdansk airport many times and seen this kind of cretinous behaviour more times than I care to remember. It's like watching 'Groundhog Day' only 20 times worse. At least we have this 'Groundhog Day' only when visit 'lovely' Poland. These people are doing this thankless, soulless job every day of their lives. I wouldn't trust these people to clean toilets let alone work in 'security' at an airport. These days I just do whatever these short haired thugs tells me to do - except bend over for a cavity search, which in any case is probably not only their job but also their hobby. Put yourself in their shoes...they have a crappy job, no future, and they hate the kind of people like me and you because of that. I'm sure when they go home to sleep at night they don't feel so good about the pathetic things they do in their 'working' day, but when you're arriving in a new a new country and with their level of intellect you're an easy target. And the more you **** them off the more they love it. So just accept it because it'll be a long time before things change and at least you can leave the country when you wish which is more than they'll ever be able to do. So the next time it happens to you smile at the guy with pity and think how lucky you are when he's having his inglorious moments of selfish, depraved pleasure. He'll still be stuck there 20 years from now (if he hasn't been fired first) and you won't.

I hope that someone who works at Gdansk airport reads this....actually no it doesn't really matter - a) you don't understand english and b) even if I wrote it in Polish it'll still be indecipherable to you - you idiots.

Customer satisfaction survey anyone?

>i'm from the philippines and at the gdansk airport, i was held in front of the immigration officer for about 15 minutes. he asked me the basic questions (where i'm from - which is stated on my passport, where i'm going/staying, how long am i going to stay there for, the name of my sponsor, their phone number, etc.) i can speak basic polish so i was trying to speak to him in polish. obviously, to no surprise, he doesn't speak english. his face was so red! at least i'm trying - and he isn't reciprocating! lovely! and then at some point, he gave up, turned away from me, stepped out from his tiny desk and shouted, "is there anybody here waiting for a lady from the philippines?" omg! it was so embarrassing. oh well, maybe he's just doing his job. but you know, they should give a little courtesy to me for at least trying to speak to him in polish. i'm based in the uk and would never want to go hiding in poland. please.

Poland is full of racist and ignorants no doubts.
I was born there (unfortunately) studied and lived there
The country has so many problems from the old to the young that have difficulty thinking by themselves.

I recalled being called a monkey by KIDS and parents pointing to me and telling their kids that i was a MONKEY:)

Its like being really uneducated and very low level of thinking.....
I mean this is 2009.Sure they watch TV, listen to radio, read papers etc...

How can the country ever get better with such thinking..
I think every pole who has lived outside Poland should be a teacher and start teaching other citizens what life is all about.

Wake up POLES!!!!!!!!!!!

Teach them what, exactly? That every country in the world must become black? How about every African country becomes more white for a change? Oh but no, that just can't possibly happen... anywhere where there is "white-owned land" on black soil has to be taken back and the whites murdered. Funny how this is acceptable and I don't see any Western governments invading Zimbabwe! Yet you moan that Poles want to keep Poland for the Polish. Get over yourselves! We have just as much right to keep Poland Polish as you have to keep Africa African.

I have an Asian friend living here who has made it his past-time counting how many Poles would sit next to him on a bus or tram (usually last) and then get up and change seats as soon as another place is vacant. Apparently, they would rather sit facing the 'wrong' side next to drunken old men smelling of alcohol and vomit. I think the record stands at 6 on a half hour ride.

Also, I witnessed an African looking gentleman on the tram the other day asking for directions in perfect Polish being completely ignored by everyone. If that's not institutionalised racism, what is?

Looking forward to responses of 'deep denial'...preferably without swear words.

Why do you look forward to it?.

Poland has very little people of colour and like ALL countries it takes time.

But of course some people think they are above others and relish the idea of looking down on others because they think they are civilized.
My recommendation is to look in the mirror and sort yourself out.
That should keep you busy enough not to look forward to responses of 'deep denial'.

Good luck

I think afropolak has a point though. People cower in their sheltered lives and lack of knowing. I remember being in a karaoke place in Japan and asking my Japanese friend, who doesn't really look Japanese, to talk to some girls. Rather predictably, when they thought he was a foreigner, they started talking about him in Japanese, expressing their doubts about him because he was 'Chinese'. This is how people are.

Also, I have a Polish-Thai-American friend. He speaks fluent English and looks Thai. He loves speaking English here and listening to the comments about him in Polish. He is fluent in Polish and studies here. He has often received derogatory remarks like Kitajcy (he has a bro too who looks similar).

People should never make assumptions like this.

If by 'said' you mean make futile attempts at entertaining your obvious superiority complex, then NO.
but if by 'said' you mean adding to the conversation and questioning your reasons and giving you sound advise, then YES.

You live here, you don't like it, it is your problem.

derogatory remarks like Kitajcy

I'm not sre it is derogatory. I'd say as derogatory as the word Brit. Kitajcy is more of a slang/informal than derogatory.
It is in fact a direct borrowing from Russian and all it means is "Chinese people". Russian "Kitaj" (in Polish spelling) is China.
(Кита́й, Китайский, китайцы/China, Chinese, Chinese people)

Not derogatory in the sense that "Pakis" means "Pakistani people", surely? Depends on context I suppose.

Yes, all depend on the context for sure.
I'd say żółtki or żółtka (yolks) is undoubtedly offensive.
Jihozapad  Jul 7, 09, 20:22    #79
Agreed.

Very few people say "Chinks" or "Chinky" over here these days, which is fortunate imo.

The suspicion was clearly based on nothing other than racism.

clearly? i see nothing that is clear from your story except that they thought you may have a fake passport.. glad they pay attention. no?

LOL, This is hillarious..!!. and you are calling this racism??.. Here is a true story that happened to me in Gdansk Downtown. I'm happily married with a lovely Polish woman, we live in the US and last summer 2008 I went to Gdansk to know my wife's hometown and meet her other part of the family. One friday, we were planning to go to "Hel" (sorry if I write something wrong), and we (My wife, My wife's cousins and myself ), stop first at downtown of Gdansk. A POLISH RACIST A.S.S.H.O.L.E first insult my wife and her cousing because she was hugging me and he start to say racist comments then the beat my wife's cousin, then he came to attack me. My first response was to run away but we were in a situation that I have NO CHOICE RATHER THAN FIGHT!!.. Well at the present I have my pinky finger a little bit messed because I BROKE THIS F.U.C.K.I.N. RACIST FACE with all my heart. After that the police came, and they believe what my family stated about this incident. Sad to say but only one folk support our version because all the poles around this context stay away and didn't help up when this ******* started to attack us. This ******* got arrested (THANKS GDANKS POLICE), with his f.u.c.k.i.n face bleeding and I hope this m.o.r.o.n think twice before he wants to attack a latino or a black again..
NOW I HAVE THIS BAD MOMENT but after that nothing else. well.. there were some people playing the bad guys at SOPOT (Mandarinka, and Viva) as well as looking for reasons to pick a fight but nothing against myself. I HAVE TO STATE HERE, THAT I HAD A LOT OF FUN IN POLAND BESIDES THIS INCIDENT. and if you ask me, NOT ALL THE POLES ARE RACIST, my best friends are polish but unfortunately, there some a.s.s.h..o.l.e.s claimming be nazis and racist. that don't tolerate any race.... Ahh At the GDANSK AIRPORT they stopped my POLISH Wife and NOT ME...LOL.. So I believe they are doing their job.

We were 2 Australians travelling to Krakow for a short period of time...At the airport in Krakow they never stamped our passports and on the way out we were questioned about how we got in there!!!!..They thought it was funny that they speak polish in front of us thinking that we woudnt know what they were saying..Fair enough we hadnt a clue what they were talking and laughing about, maybe it was our Polish surname and the fact they we came from Australia...When we finally got through my husband said "good bye" in polish and the look on their faces was priceless..they were proberbly thinking that we could understand everything they were saying!...In Frankfurt again they were checking us (moslty me the female) over like a fine tooth comb, having to be checked several times by the electronic hand held thing...they were laughing and had a good ol time, trygin to speak like an aussie!..Mind you we had a great time there (in Poland) and this was the least our problems...

German cities,

They're clean but usually pretty pedestrian.

aphrodisiac:
German cars,

Japanese are just as good and a cheaper. American cars are more creative. Krauts wouldn't design something like the Corvette, PT Cruiser. The VW Bug was creative in the day though.

aphrodisiac:
German beer,

Czech and Mexican, probably Polish just as good. German food is bland.

German engineers,

I'll give you that.. they're not better architects though.

Both cars look really good, Filios. The Corvette is a classic car.

Japanese cars are reliable and stylish for the most part.

The Ford KA is a super wee motor, Filios. Still, the Americans prefer practical motors. Not as cool as Ferraris and Lamborghinis.

believe me... I have friends who tried to argue with Polish police and border police =( never again!!!!
