Souvenirs in Krakow/Katowice?

Hi guys. I'm a student, and I'll be travelling to Poland soon for a week and a half. Lodging and meals have been mostly covered by the organisers of the trip, but I would like to know how much I should bring for souvenirs and how much certain souvenirs would cost. I'm very interested in bringing nice amber back home, as well as relatively cheap local produce.

Any suggestions for what to get and where? Your imput is very much needed as I need to plan my budget for the trip. Thanks!

Amber's not cheap in southwest Poland, but there are inexpensive souvenirs from the stalls at the foot of Wawel Hill in Krakow.

I think Kato has 2 souvenir shops, not a touristy place at all, best thing is to go to Mariacka and enjoy the new pubs and restaurants.
Krakow's the place for gifts, you can buy anything from cheap tacky magnets to expensive wool rugs/amber/ hand made chess pieces, but sure if you're coming to Poland the best souvenir to bring home is some good quality vodka and you can get that in an off license here for feck all

Well, I would like to know what price cheap refers to. 5-10zl? And expensive being >50 zl? i doubt I'll be able to bring alcohol back, I'll get taxed massively by my own country...

those of us who live here can actually give you better advice. In Krakow at the Sukenice you will be able to find everything you are looking for within your budget. Where exactly are you going?
Don't souvenir shop in Warsaw. There is nothing except in the old town and it is expensive. If you can wait til Krakow- you will have good luck there.

For some people it is a string of slightly polished amber beads for 50 zlotys, for others sophisticated silver- amber jewellery for a few hundred. What do you mean by nice amber? For some people it is a string of slightly polished amber beads for 50 zlotys, for others sophisticated silver- amber jewellery for a few hundred.

Hmmm, I guess relatively cheap amber in the form of strings of beads should be nice enough.

Well, over here in my country smokes are massively taxed at around 30+ PLN, and souvenirs from tourist attractions cost about 50PLN when they cost about 10-20 in a roadside stall, so yeah I want to get a feel of the price range if I decided to explore back alleys instead of buying from branded shops

smoking will kill you- don't waste your money. seriously, if you hold out till Krakow and go to the Sukienicce you will have no problem staying within your budget. There are loads of Polish handicrafts, amber, wood carvings- and at a variety of price point. don't worry- you will find something.

Of course you don't know because you don't actually live here.
It is possible to get a simple silver with amber necklace for under 100 pln.
It is possible to buy an amber necklace on string for under 20 pln.
it is possible to get inexpensive wooden boxes.
large wooden carvings are obviously more expensive than smaller ones. it depends on the simplicity of it.
a chess set is going to be more expensive buy you can find a small wooden carved one for under 50 pln.

like I posted previously, wait till the Sukienicce. It has everything at a variety of price points.

perhaps you have never been there. you don't live here- so how would you actually know how much things cost in Krakow old town. wait, your sisters nephews uncles brother from Kielce told you?

Listen to pip and pawian. I cant comment on prices these days but when I was in Krakow as a student I still managed to come home loaded with cheap but chearfull stuff from the centre of Krakow (and bought my cigs off some dudes in the coach park on the river bank....not recomended...).

Hi, I just wanna tell that what pip says is absolutely accurate.
2 years ago the prices of silver jewelery with amber were something like 15+ for a ring, 30+ for earring and about 50 zł for necklace and now the prices may be just a few zlotys higher.

Paradoxically it seems to me that in Sukiennice you can get relatively cheap souvenirs because the stalls there target all groups of clients - from school children with their tiny pocket money to stinking rich people.

Hey, it is not a question to me, I am not a merchant, sorry. If I was, I would be selling souvenirs in Sukiennice, instead of my knowledge. :):):)
