FUZZYWICKETS: which is his only option, really. you're not going to send a foreigner to Middleofnowhere Zdroj, Poland, to travel around, especially without knowing the local lingo. Krakow, Warsaw, Wroclaw, Poznan, Gdansk, etc.
Why not?
I've travelled around Hungary, including going off the beaten trail where knowledge of English is minimal at best, and didn't have any problems. Heck, I've wandered around remote parts of Serbia/Montenegro/Albania before and didn't have any real issues.
I'd argue that if you want to discover Poland, avoiding the big cities is a must. While going to somewhere like Suwalki might be a bit crap, there's no harm in discovering Karkonosze, Bieszczady, etc...
