A week in Krakow (February) - info about weather, hotels, and traffic

I'm going to be visiting Krakow in early February for 1 week. Should I expect it to be bitterly cold the entire week? Just wondering if I should even bother bringing shoes, or just my cold-weather Sorels. Are the hostels pretty much empty that time of year? Thanks for any input.

Why would you want to go to such a smelly and disgusting place like Krakow? It's full of tramps who mug you for money.

Ah Krakow the place I love the most. I left part of my heart there, with an intention of returning sometime.

More specifically, wouldn't it be odd to be in a pub at 10:00pm in big winter boots? Or will everyone be wearing such?

Everyone will be like that ;) The cold only gives you more reason to enjoy mulled wine and not to leave the pub. Hostels will be quieter than usual but there will be some folk about. Winter is the best time to visit Krakow, as most of the annoying tourists are not there and you will have more fun with the locals anyway :) Try not to stick only to the square, venture out and explore other places to find the little gems.

pgtx: Krakow rocks! Best statement on this thread. I couldn't agree more. Funnily enough, i've seen women wear normal boots during winter.....it's the salt residue on the boots you should be worried about. Apparently it causes extensive tear & wear! i always wear my Timbs, now thats a boot when in need.

You should be aware that even one night in Krakow can make a hard man humble ;) Apart from that, take warm clothes and enjoy!

I spent some time in Krakow... very nice indeed. Take something to protect your ears from wind chill.

Krakow is a great place and as lots of stuff to offer and see, sad though u will only get to see the snow every thing will be covered with snow, but i am sure u will have a good time,

David_18: You have to visit the undergrounds clubs. Yeah I think that these are so atmospheric, its almost addictive. They are so unique in their existance. Time goes by so quickly in these underground caverns, its 5am before you know it.

ucenic1: Any in particular you would recommend? Prozack is an awsome club. Tequila Club is cool too. Propaganda is a wierd but awsome place. it got a communist theme. Jazz Rock Cafe. Cold Lady. B-Side. Then you can just make a beer tour around the city untill you find the place of your liking.

Krakow is horrible at that time of year weather wise, but provided you're bundled up it also represents one of the few times of the year you can enjoy the city without a deluge of tour groups, backpackers and stag groups blocking your path. Bring a hat, it will save your ears, no matter how stupid you might look.
