heading there soon, what's good to do?
pubs/restaurants/museum/photo-ops/graffiti walls.

Actually forgive my ignorance on the subject but what's Wroc³aw famous for?...like Krakow has churches and the old Jewish part and lager louts, Kato has awesome coalmines and a funky language & Nikizowice, Warsaw has....err.....err....Katowice's money :) etc etc.

I'll start...

The enormous Panorama Rac³awicka painting (15x 114 meters) (depicts the Battle of Rac³awice during the Ko¶ciuszko Uprising). It was the equivalent IMAX 3D experience of the time.

oogling women on Rynek
The botanical gardens are nice
Jewish cemetery/Soviet one is interesting too
A walk through Ostrow Tumski
Cruise up the Odra on one of those drunkard boats
Hala Ludowa is neat, the Japanese Garden is right next door...and the light show fountain that sucked up all the money for road repairs...
Your normal assortment of museums for a city this size.

Yea, that's about it. Give me a shout if you're going to be here in the next couple of weeks. Wroclaw is famous for having been German a couple of years back. If German history interests you, there's quite a bit here. Polish history..the Cathedral Island is about it.

I suggest Glowny and the KFC in the center. Also the tower where you have to step 200 staircases to enjoy the view of the city.

It only seems to be open in the summer. It's in Rynek and worth the climb.

Is this tower relatively new? I don't think it was there in my time.

It's the Garrison church, St Elizabeth's.

it costs about 2zl to climb the spire.

the church was repaired 10 or 15 years ago.

Wow Mod! I don't recognize the building facades. They're so bright and clean! I'm gonna be so disoriented when I get back. I gonna need a guide! LOL

For those who have been away for 15 yrs or more.

the cathedral had no spires. towers, yes. but no spires. it's back to its full glory.

google some pictures of wroclaw. compare: past and present.

rynek and the area around it and ostrow tumski were cleaned up for the Popes visit in 97.

the hala ludowa, now hala stulecia, has been cleaned up. the zoo has had money spent on it. and plac bema is now built over with the google building.

in a few years, when it's completed, we will have the biggest music venue in europe. not sure of the facts on this though.

the area of hotel panorama is now galeria dominiikanska

anything u need to know... let me know.

Unbeleivable! The zoo was such a pathetic place in my day. The Google building on Plac Bema!? No more Hala Ludowa? Oh the shock of it all :) I am sooo stoked to make this trip! Is the Hotel Panorama still standing?....I will definitely take you up on your offer.

No more Hala Ludowa?

not in name. it's still there, but cleaner.

the hotel was rebuilt and renamed. it's now adjoining the Galeria building

the zoo changed hands and with it came investment. it's many years since i last visited so can't tell u what it's like now.

check post number 4 by convex. the light-show fountain cost something like 8 million to build and has a repair bill of 8 million.

the area around the new football stadium is very different. new roads etc.

Would you believe I saw Suzi Quatro in the Hala Ludowa? The crowd was really into the show. You know, getting into it. The MO shut the show down! I still remember how bummed we all were(not to mention the performers).

As for an open towers and other high points in Wroclaw there is actually quite a few of them:
- aforementioned tower of St Elizabeth's church is the highest
- one of the cathedral towers on Ostrow Tumski
- math tower of Wroclaw Uniwersity
- cathedral of St Marii Magdalene
- the view from car park on Renoma mall is quite entertaining and for free :-)
- the view from car park on Dominikanska the same
- restaurant on the roof of Monopol hotel

That is for a city center. There are a few others off a beaten tracks places but those are for a hardcore city explorers :-) Like for example the highest floor of Faculty of Civil Engineering of Wroclaw University of Technology.

PS. It is quite probable that there will be an open restaurant on the last floor of Sky Tower. It should be a nice view from a 200 metres, except a sea of a commieblocks maybe ;) But we must wait for that a few years to judge.

I lived in Kar³owice. What ever became of: 1) the PZPR building? and 2) the Soviet army base?

Kar³owice is a nice district but I'm not very familiar with it. As far as I know part of the army base was given to the University, some of it became just private flats, some stayed with the Polish army (not sure of that though). As for PZPR building no idea where it is...

PS. I think you can appreciate site with all kinds of photos from Breslau and Wroclaw, old and new:
http://wroclaw.hydral.com.pl/

It is probably the best site of this kind about Wroclaw. One second of googling in it and there it is:
przychodnia

Is it that building? Now there is a medical unit in it.

yea I am currently recovering in Rynek after a horror dental trip my wife had organised. I cannot eat, swallow, drink or even breathe cause my teeth are so sensitive after a horrible whitening procedure I enjoyed in a small skanky town Jelenia Gora. Went to KCM Dental Clinic on Bankowa Street only to find out them so called doctors didnt speak proper English and miming is really not enough when you try to describe your dental problem. they had put some blue gel onto my teeth - I swallowed a lot of that sh... and feel intoxicated right now - and sat there with my head tilted back smiling to a lamp. It hurts as F... and my teeth arent even whiter! From some beige it went to lemon-yeloow well thank you very much. We stayed there for 4 days, it was supposed to be a tourist town - give me a break. Slums, bad weather, no attractions, skanky people. But wroclaw is better indeed and maybe Id enjoy it some more if it wasnt for this horrible pain - never thought teeth can hurt like that. My missus is enjoying a beer in Highlander Pub here and all I can do is to sip with a straw. Never ever again. Wroclaw's worth seeing indeed we really came here for a treatment and it was not worth the money nor effect. And how the doc was rude when we started protesting, speaking to his nurse instead of us, barely spoke English anyway, will never visit Poland for any kind of medical treatment. Wifey says Pubs are good.

Was it the ZOOM method? Some people find that really hard to put up with.

It's the same wherever they do it. Uncomfortable.
