I just bought my first android phone, a htc magic vodafone from germany. no sim lock.

I now live in poland and am using the polish Play fresh. When using wifi i have no problem surfing the net, signing in to google, etc. etc...

But when i turn off the wifi and try it over the phone's carrier service I can't sign in, go online in any application, however, I can recive and make phone calls as well as sms. I even tried my swedish Halebop over roaming here in poland and i tried my girlfriends simplus, and my 3g era (starter) datacard which i use for my UMPC, NONE of them work.

UPDATE just got back home...

Well this is certainly an interesting development...

Seems like the people at the Play Fresh Store says my phone isn't supported by them.

Is this true? Do certain android phones not work with providers? Do you have to collect lists of supported models before you buy your phone? I want to buy a new more modern Android phone in Sweden because they're cheaper there than here in Poland, and i want it unbranded without all the crapware and logos the network providers riddle their phones with.

2-band phone, perhaps? Or a contractual limitation in the smallprint somewhere. My iPhone doesn't work outside PL (but that's how I want it so as not to get caned for roaming data charges)...

Apparently Orange offers them here in Poland.

@alexw68 that's all fine and all if that's what you want, but can you choose to buy a prepaid card for limited time use in another country if the need would arise?

I think my phone is a 3G since it has the option in it's settings to only use 2G for battery conservation.

@convex Orange offers the HTC Magic? so I could go down to their store and see if i get better results?

Thread attached on merging:
Is there english language options on a polish bought Android?

Since my HTC Magic doesn't seem to be working out I was thinking of buying:

Samsung Galaxy S I9000 : : POLSKA DYSTRYBUCJA : : GWARANCJA SAMSUNG 24m : : bez simlocka

From: mediaphone.net.pl/pl/samsung-galaxy-s-i9000-polska-dystrybucja-gwaranc ja-samsung-24m-bez-simlocka.html?partner=1984

Now, my polish is almost completely absent so I was wandering if the phones you buy here still have the language choosing option?

I'm asking here in hopes of saving some time =)

Yea, looks like they're the distributors in PL. They probably have a prepaid data package for it.

Right, if they sell the phone, it probably works on their network :)

Try to setup network settings like APN, username and password. Note, that Play have limited internet coverage (Era, Orange and Plus works everywhere).

As far as I know, Play works with this settings:
APN: internet
Username and Password leave blank.

Play internet works only with Play's native 3G network. Make sure that you are in area where 3G is available.

For Era:
APN: erainternet (erainternettt - for "Tak Tak" prepaid users)
Username: erainternet
Password: erainternet

Note that prepaid users have different APN. All users (post paid and pre paid) have same username and password. This settings does not apply for Heyah (Era network).

Tip: Look for the data packages if you want to use mobile internet often.

@MichaelG Thanks man, but it turns out to be really wierd this problem.... I finally took the thumbs out of my ass and learned how to root it and installed tha cyanomod thing, so now i got android 2.2 instead of the original 1.6 vodafone version.... EVERY problem got resolved...

Just goes to show you I was right always thinking NEVER BUY a branded cellphone / computer.

You're right. I paid 600 PLN to get non branded 3G 21Mb/s dongle because my 2 modems (one from era and the second from Orange) doesn't works with my mac computer.

If we talking about branded cellphones - Era and Play don't simlock theirs phones. I've bought my iPhone from Era and it works with Plus as well with all features. Orange and Plus sells simlocked phones so you can use them only in native network.

How much do you pay for the mobile internet in your phone. Maybe it's worth to activate data package?

I have recently acquired a HTC smart phone offered on contract with Plus, it was given to me and i use my pay as you go Plus sim card. Everything works fine but im a bit reluctant to set up email as i used about 45 PLN of credit in just 15 minutes just checking out basic web sites. The phone was new and had automatic weather updates on as default i assume this costs as the credit was constantly being used up.

I thought the credit was used up with the amount of data being sent to the phone, if thats the case its really expensive, like i said i was only on line for about 15 minutes and visited only a few basic pages then bamn 40 PLN gone.

Does anybody know the specifics on a SimPlus network?

Wow, the only thread where all these smarty pants peeps actually bow down and begging for mercy.
Go pray to a church. (chances are your reception will be better there as most probably your local church spire has a antenna from all the major networks up there)

change the settings. the updates can be set to a set number of updates per day. if it is on max then u are giving money away.

on my phone the weather updates were coming through at e-mail cost.

Yep - you want to pay for a specific data package.

Dial *110#, select option 5, then you have a list of data packages to choose from. Simplus is quite pricey for data though - 35zl for 0.5GB. And whatever you do, make sure that you always have a data package - I think it's about 2gr for 10kb of transfer if you don't.

You can check how much data you have left by dialling *121#

Cheers that worked out nicely, although it was option 4 pakiety not 5.

I guess even somebody could buy some packets "Pakiety Internetowe w Play Fresh"..
Anyone can buy packet's for different memories.. and could access internet in the Play simcard..
Even in some special Android mobile which has different interface for Setting. Where internet options are inside Wireless settings!!
Good luck and Have fun !

Be very very careful with Play in running over your data as I have a 1Gb package which costs me 25zl and I went over it and ended up paying an extra 375zl on top of my monthly 100zl contract.
They do not warn you either - now I have an app which warns me how much data I use https://market.android.com/details?id=com.symantec.monitor&hl=en

Why don't you change your contract into one that would include a data transfer package? Then, after exceeding the package limit, the transfer speed goes down to minimal but there's no extra charge. And if you want to up the transfer again before the end of the month, you can buy an extra package for, like, 10 zł.
My son has a 45 zł/month contract with Play including 500Mb data transfer. Check up the All Inclusive contracts on Play website.
