Zakopane for Sylvester - is it time to book now?

It is that time of year, when you have to book your new years event. This year we have decided to stay in PL. We decided on Zakopane. Anyone stayed in a place they would recommend in Zakopane, we want to be quite central, so we are not interested in Bialka, kocielisko or Witow . Any hidden gems? dates 27.12.10 to 2.1.2011

I was in Zakopane earlier today.

http://www.stamary.pl/ is a very nice place.

I could imagine Zako being a bit of a let down on New Years Eve, expect huge prices and lots of crowds! But maybe you're into that kinda thing :)

Doesn't that pretty much sum up NYE in every destination?
Skiing is cool on NYE.

Yep! :) Roznów is where I spent most of my NYEs in Poland.

Poland seems particularly awful - crap bars charging over 100zl to get in, endless crap "entertainment" and dire food and drink on offer. They seem to really make a big deal out of it, but it's not my thing at all.

Hopefully this year, it'll be a roadtrip to Tallinn, weather dependent :/

On the contrary, Roznow is great for NYE, that's why I kept going back there. A group of about 10 of us would rent a chalet for 2 nights for 20pln per night each. Plus the owner made your breakfast, lunch and dinner for you for free and put up a NYE party in the hall for the village with LOTS of cheap beer and many attempts to kill the lot of us by dodgey drunk attempts to set of fireworks. Can't recommend the place more!

*note to self, the girls in Roznow are very....

Thanks SeanBM, I know this place, I have not stayed there yet, it is very close to the church. We have family in Witow which is a great place to stay, but we have friends comings from the UK so they want to be in the thick of things. I will contact them tomorrow.

Absolutely not zako is great fun if planned well. Just don't expect to get a taxi, so make sure you juice the palm that drives well in advance.

Great!

If you haven't already, a wonderfully romantic activity is to take a horse drawn sleigh with torches at night time through the forest in the mountains....She'll love it ;)

No, the Stamary is fully booked, no rooms available. The other places recommended are Hotel Litwor, Hotel Wersal and Hotel Belwedere.

Yep done the "Kuligu" many times. great fun, stopping off and drinking your góralska herbata and cooking kiebasa, on an open fire in the snow.

funny how with so many great places in the polish Tatras, everybody decides to go to Zakopane which is the most crowded, pain in the a55 place at that time...

not when you're paying a huge amount to what is essentially just to get drunk in some pub where it takes you 30mins to order a beer :D

I think the best bet would be to look at the towns around and outside Zako, 1.Because they are less commercial 2. Will have a more "Polish" style NYE.

Anyway I can't talk, this year I'm going to the worlds biggest hogmanay party in Edinburgh! Either that or am heading up into the Mountains with the family to rent out a wooden cabin:)

I live close enough to Zakopane and I wouldn't go there but I do like it off season.

PGTX is right, there are loads of places that are equally as good as Zakopane around the area but are less known.

They can't build the motorway to Zakopane because there are too many illegally built houses.

Poronin, Koscielisko, essentialy the place you stay when you couldn't make your mind up in september. so you left it to November to book.

Szczawnica, only four ski runs, and the only place worth staying is the Batory Hotel.

Bukowina, your on a budget and you would really like to go to Zakopane.

The only other place that is interesting in the area is Białka Tatrzańska.

i went to Zakopane for NYE a few times... it was fun, we went hiking, my tips of my hair froze, kulig & wódeczka+baran with highlanders... very recommended experience... :)

I have been to so many places there SeanBM, have you been skiing close to the hot water springs in slovakia, close to the old border crossing at Sucha Hora. If yes what is the skiing like, any good ?

I have been to a hot water spa in Slovakia and I pass through a ski resort on the way to my friends place there and I can't remember the name of either.. but I haven't gone skiing there yet.
Not much help I know sorry, hopefully I will have more to report after this season :)

There is a place that we go to, whenever we are in the Zakopane area, its on the road into Witow from Dolina Chochołowska, on the right hand side is a house where they smoke the Oscypek, it is fresh and inexpensive.

The place I mentioned in Slovakia is near to Oravice here is the link http://www.meanderpark.com/page.php?id=3, I have been there a few times but now you can ski, go for apres ski, then off to the thermal pools to relax. The interesting thing is it could be -15 and you are in the pools and you don't feel cold. If you are in this area I highly recommend it.
