it is not a Polish one, and it is not found in all over Poland - it belongs to the orthodox or Greek catholic church and you have mentioned that your roots are Lemko roots.
You woud be better off to ask your relatives in Poland.

I just briefly googled it : Lemko cross - lots of info

You're probably right, I'd seen the cross in the southeast and also on the pictures of grave stones of departed relatives in Wroclaw and Zelone Gore. So i assumed it was common in the whole of Poland.

I'd googled polish triple cross/polish cross before and come up with nothing but film reviews. Thanks I'll try lemko cross this time...

Did that couldn't find anything other than Lemko history and a ref to a lemko cross.

there is a definate story of how the cross with the three bars came to be, someone once tried to explain it to me but the bulk of it was lost due to my poor polish.

Thank You Miranda, you're a gem.
Its a very credible explination but not the same as I heard and partly understood. That was a tale of saints and holy battles with cirtain victors nailing the extra bars onto the original cross. But as you say I can always ask on my next visit to Poland in October.

you are welcome. I found out somethign about my own religion too, since my parents are from the villages in Lesko area and the cross is part of my heritage.

Let me know when you find more from your relatives/friends in Poland.

PS. I just find that we mostly don't ask what's behind a symbol and I am glad that you have asked that question. I learned something too:)
