Dzien dobry everyone.
I have just started learning Polish and I'm really stuck on the pronunciation of this number trzy. It is just too hard to pick up the sound of this word. The phonetic spelling that I have got is "tshi" but, the spoken sound of this word is nothing like this spelling.

I can get by with all the numbers from 1 to 100 but, if any number has trzy in it then, I'm stuck. Has anyone got a simple way of teaching me this word? Another phonetic spelling of it? Sounds like another word similar to it? My thanks to anyone who could help.

The 't' is pronounced with the tongue flat on the palette just behind the front teeth.
The 'rz' has the tongue further back in the mouth, more like where the English 'r' sound is.
I think the 'rz' is also voiced (a 'zh' sound more than a 'sh' sound)
The 'y' is like the English 'i' in the word 'bit'. Maybe slightly tending towards the 'e' in 'shed'.

Thanks for your help Osiol. I will have to practice that lots.
Such a difficult word that only has four letters for beginners.

there you go, I suck at recording sounds on the computer, so I decided to look for a famous song from the eighties (Trzy zapałki - Three matchsticks - by TSA), where you can here the word in the song's refrain (first - 1min32sec into the song, and then also at the end - 3min59sec)
it's a youtube style video clip

oops, I think the Admin edited my post and linked ANOTHER live version of the song (by some other singer, I think), which is unfortunate, because the sound is poorer and the pronounciation is a little worse (and you can forget about the exact moments I indicated with the word "trzy" - they don't match)

You should get "Before you know it" it's a program that lets you hear and see the words.

You can get it here: byki.com

I'm far from perfect, but how I learned: I stumbled upon a group setting up for a concert or something like that in Warsaw. For the sound check it was: jeden, dwa, trzy. Now I carry that in my head.
