TV / Internet provider and stores (Warsaw area)

Hello everyone,

My apologies in advance if this has been answered before, in a prior thread...

Can you guys recommend a good TV service provider, in the area of Warsaw? While I speak both languages, I'd wish to have a choice of Polish and American / UK content, in their native language.

The same goes for an Internet provider... Ideally I'd like to get services from the same company, who offers both, TV and Internet. That would be most convenient.

Lastly, what's a good and reliable online store where I can order electronics (tv's, video etc..) and other household items?

In fact, are there any recommended "brick and mortar" stores, to furnish ones' home, in the area of Warsaw, specifically within about 50km south and south / west of the capital city?

chello will give you both cable TV and internet package of 1Mb or 2Mb for around 70zl.

Just a quick follow-up........ I checked out chello and I'm very impressed. I can get tv, internet and tel as a package! :)

Perhaps a trivial question but I'm curious, do you know if programs, on such stations as HBO and TCM, which were originally american made, are in English? Do they dub or have subtitles?

in Poland they rather have a lector (a male voiceover, not dubbing), but I'm only guessing - that's how it works with TCM on Sat TV (of course you can switch to the English version anytime), however I have no idea what they're doing on chello.

This is usually dubbed, but sometimes they have films that are not dubbed and have Polish text but not too often.

Besides Chello (from UPC), there is “Aster”: 50 Zloty for 58 TV chanels and 58 Zloty for Internet (758 kb/sec during day, 1.5mbit/sec during night – faster options are available, but more expensive). For only the Internet option it is 63 Zloty. Installation costs are 19 Zloty. BUT, if you want it for less than two years, it is more expensive: 109 Zloty per month for Internet only!

Just a thought it's important on your bandwidth allocation as well, as some internet providers will limit it, and this is no good if you watch on line films and such like.
I get 1Mb with unlimited bandwidth for 50zl here in Pulawy.

So, in the end I chose Chello (from UPC): 99 Zloty per month (69 for internet -unlimited bandwith, 2mb/s pobierania (don't know what that is??), 384kb/s wysylania (??)- and 50% discount on the television connection which is 60 Zloty). They give the 1st month for free. It's a 16 month contract. If you break it before - which I might need to do :( - it's 420 Zloty. 9.99 Zloty installation costs. Nothing should be paid to the installation person - they contact you later by email for the payment. They were very friendly on the phone, and much better reacheable than Aster, even on a Sunday. But UPC seems a bit less responsive to email than Aster (they called me back immediately after I sent them an email).

WOT 30, Just wondering if you contact with UPC was in enlish or polish? I need to get internet in but i dont speak polish so any companies that provide an enlgish speaker would be of use to me.

If you want good English TV, just get Sky TV: it's only 95zl a month right now and offers hundreds of English channels (add to that 400zl for a dish/fitting and £30 for a used digibox). If you want Sky Sports (i.e. no need to spend lots at the bar / no excuse to escape the misses) or Sky Movies, it's £30 a month (145zl). The full package is £40 (from memory).

Do you mean that tvcatchup.com is only UK-based? You may well be right, I have never used tvcatchup.com. Do you mean that Sky TV is only available to UK-based people? It certainly isn't. I haven't been UK-based for more than 12 years but I've had Sky for more than six years. All you do is find somebody you trust in the UK and get them to sign up to Sky for you. It's best to get an existing Sky subscriber but not essential. All your friend does is contact Sky and say they need a (second) card for a digibox. A good friend of theirs is a satellite TV engineer so they have no need for a Sky guy to come fit the box for them. The only two important things to watch for is that the payment for the card comes from a UK bank account (or UK credit card) which is registered at a UK address and that the UK addresss the card is sent to/registered at has a Uk TV license.

I tried to access tvcatchup.com and i was told that they could see i was not in the Uk so i was denied access. Oh well..

I am using it right now, just ignore the message and complete the registration and it should be ok, if you have any more problems then contact me and I will show you a different way to do it.

Just use a UK proxy server and you should be sweet.
