Twood: I'll be in Gdansk in a month

Hello,
When the Berlin was still standing I wondered what Eastern Europe was like. I was young and busy, I had no time to travel. Now it's 25 years later and I've got an opportunity to come and see for myself what the Baltic sea coast looks like.
I want to stay along the coast and see the small towns on my way from Amsterdam to Sopot and Gdansk. I don't have any set itinerary but I've figured out a course to follow. I've learned a little German, (very little), and know no Polish.
I'm open to suggestions and or advice.
My work here in the US is in the construction of custom, homes. I'm especially interested in meeting people who are in that business and seeing what they build and how they build it.

the summer season was kicking off this last weekend. i took a trip to hel and back and the english and german speakers are starting to arrive.

in sopot the chairs and tables are out on monte cassino and the first concerts are being played on the molo.

this long weekend will see the warsaw crowds descend on the coast. towns like leba and debki will awake from their winter sleep and the summer seasons fun will start again

bring it on

I'm thinking I'll follow the coastline from Szczecin to Sopot. Maybe through Koszalin and Slupsk. I haven't decided. The whole trip going to be decided on a day by day basis. I know very little about what I'm really going to find. I don't know what the coastline is like but I'm looking forward to exploring it. I'll start in Amsterdam and will have about a week.

Do you live in Sopot? How fast can one go on the highways? Is it accurate to assume I could travel at an average of 100 km/hr? More? Less?

i imagine your drive will be fun and beautiful - much of the baltic coastline is stunning

speed limit, whats that?

there are these signs with numbers in them by the side of the road but they appear to be for decorative purposes only. my jeep manages about 120 with a good tail wind and i get over taken constantly.

watch out for drivers who have no consideration or understanding of what other eauropeans consider common road sense

I'm sending this off early in the morning and have no time to ask the questions I have right now. I'll be back on in 12 hours or so. But here's one question: Am I doing this right? Why does it appear that I'm responding to myself? T.

I wondered if it was normal that replies I make to your messages count as "replies" to my original post. It's nothing really. I'm a total novice at forums.

So here's a couple more novice questions for you:

Everybody knows that the German Autobahn has no speed limit in many places. Is it also true in Poland? Can I drive as fast as my rented car will take me from Berlin to Gdansk on, for instance, E28? ( I hope I've got the right designation for that road).

Also, is it true that I have to be really worried about somebody trying to steal my rental car? Are the thieves dangerous? If so, how so?

Last thing; what do you do for a living?
