Hi,
I'm an American but I am 3rd generation polish. My great grand parents immigrated to America from Poland. Anyways I'm thinking of studying abroad in Poland to learn Polish and travel and see Poland. How different is the life in Poland and do you guys recommend coming to Poland to study abroad. I know some basic things about polish culture and food. Also how easy is it for a college student to live for a couple of months in Poland?

Thanks in advance
Steve

You can rent a small flat! Or maybe a hostel... ... Or be paying guest

I live in Lublin with my boyfriend who's family is polish. We are both from the northeast area in the US. For us the weather is about the same but it's more difficult to get around. Clearing roads and sidewalks are rare and it's a mess to travel in but can be done.
Food is great although translating ingrediants and cooking specifics can prove to be difficult. There are a couple McDonalds and some polish stands that are delicious!
There is not a lot to do here other than drink. I don't know what your used to at home, but we've found there's little to keep us busy.
Neither of us speak polish and it's not too difficult to get around. You get frustrated trying to get your point across but most of the time a friendly pole will help you out. We have been here for about 5-6 months. My boyfriend is studying here and I am teaching. We miss home and the comforts of big city living but it's nothing a trip to Warsaw won't cure.
Good luck with everything!
Val

You could always try the Polish Embassy in America and ask for the cultural section. There are a few summer Polish Language courses run through the summer and it would be a good idea to try one of these first to see if you like it. I did one many years ago in Krakow connected to jagiellonski and I believe there was also a course run in Lublin. I do not keep in contact now and am unaware of the prsesent circumstances. They arrange accommodation in their student hostel and the food was excellent. as an American citizen, the course carried credits which I think you would be able to use back home in the U.S.A. later. Only thing for you of course is that you would have to pay for the return flight and I do not know how much that would be from the USA. I came to Poland by train from England and that was fine.

Um yea its spelled Krakow but I thought its pronounced cracov and Ive seen sites calling it Cracov. Anyways I'm sure any of the cities in Poland are better than the city I'm currently studying at. And I'm looking for a semester or year abroad. I may change my program that requires me to study abroad and learn a new language. And since my Babkia speaks polish why not learn a language I can use at home too.

Jagiellonian University for sure - better reputation and overall educational ratings.

I would definately recommend the Jagielonnia one. They offer courses in English, and the University is really high in the rankings, while Krakow is one of the most important cultural centers in Poland.

Cool I'm in the process of filling an application for Jagiellonian University with a company called lexia. I may apply directly to Jagiellonian University but my GPA isn't that high. My GPA in my field of study is 2,8 so I'm not sure of the minimum requirements for applying to Jagiellonian University directly. If anyone knows tell me please.
