LOL so what's the latest news in the UK. Think there will be any rescue missions? if so, hoping it won't turn out like Operation eagle claw

I think we would be looking at a lot of dead Americans if they had returned fire, what I find appaling is that there was no aerial fire power covering the inflatables or was this on the orders imposed on the military by one of the worst goverments we have had in Britain that I can remember.

You think lessons would have been learned after the previous incident in 2004, but I am sure that HMS Cornwall could have taken out the Iranian gunboats if they had wanted to, this smacks of the military having its hands tied again.

you'd think that wouldn't you. Its classic that most of these operations have so much knowledge and todays training is far better they still make the rudimentry mistakes

on big and small levels of operations!

napoleon's march to moscow...inadequate supplies,

hitler...same mistake! (that and fighting two fronts - but its a mistake im eternally grateful for!)

george bush - trying to re-write american MODERN history LOL! if you member, the aircraft carrier for eg tht displayed 'mission accomplished' and bush under it was 'removed' and 'edited' on the offical websites

i do hold the opinion that the british in the field are very professional (*these days)

*im overlooking India, Ireland and other colonial lands that weren't so fortunate to have such a disciplined force - but that's learning from history i think and bravo to them for doing so!

I am bewildered about the fact that the US and Britian allowed the USSR to keep E. Gemany and Poland as war prizes. I am actualy more interested in finding more info about that and why Winston Churchill , or what role he had in it.

Winston Churchill, in contrary to official British foreign politics in times after WWI, sympathized with the reestablished states of Eastern Europe in he between war period. I will write about it in a different, more appropriate thread.

Anyway,
why is everyone picking on America??

Because it is a superpower, and just like any other superpower, in order to maintain its position it tries to affect inner politics of other smaller countries. Especially those lain in strategic areas, such as Middle East. Is it right? Not really, but the truth is that if its not going to be "those arrogant Mericans" than somebody else will reach for those lands. Take a look at Africa. After WWII it lost it's strategic position in Europe’s foreign politics ( more important for Europe was to rebuild their economy, etc...) and now the Islamic influence are dominating over western ones. Such a loss can be crucial in the future. Poles once thought that if they leave their neighbors alone, they would do the same thing. The outcome of this situation was that Prussia gained in strength just under our nose and that we lost our independence for over 100 years.

Every superpower tries to manipulate its population. That's a fact. The only difference is how they are trying to accomplish it. Personally I prefer American methods to Russian or Islamic terrorist ones. I think you all catch my drift.

It is time for other nations to take a strong lead and show the the middle eastern cowards who is the boss in the world.
So, you can't count on 'merica to police the world. Well, somebody has to be in charge. The world can not be run as an Anarchy.

I absolutely agree with you Eurola. If we don't intervene, we are blamed. If we do intervene, we are blamed. It's a vicious cycle that will never end until we are replaced as the leading superpower.

Sorry but have to barge in on your comment on this one, I think your views on Middle Eastern cowards are as the all belong to terrorist group and their entire country is a terrorist and the US and UK should go in and control them and bring peace to the Middle Eastern counties. Due to some extremist the whole world think Middle East is full of terrorist.
So who really is the boss in the world? America... no, UK… no, France…. No. Germany… no lets say for instance if the middle eastern situation was in Europe, will the European people like America or UK to govern them and to show the European people who’s the boss. What would you comments be on this situation?

The truth is that the world is already in chaos. It can never be solved by just few countries, who have nothing but greed to conquer all.

No aerial coverage? I don't know the situation specifics, as Americans almost *ALWAYS* have a backup, gunships or something... I'm interested in whether the Iranian gunboats surprised the RN boats, and if the RN boats had firepower of their own to call in? If they were on "Patrol" one would think they had the "oomph" to back them up should they need it....
Still, even Americans aren't so stupid to attack armored gunboats with a RHIB and no backup...probably first move would be to avoid contact in the first place. After all, we aren't at war with THEM, at least not overtly.
Interesting the Eastern Europe thing. In school they never really went over the "why" of that, so until I was older I had supposed it was to be "fair" to the Soviets. Nowadays...I wonder how much of it had to do with a spy inside the US giving the Soviets the secrets to nuclear weapons, and if Truman knew it had already happened.
Just speculating here.
