Versailles was about revenge, nothing else. It'll probably go down as being one of the worst treaties ever - it satisfied hardly anyone, it caused possibly decades of war and did hardly anything to actually resolve the probles - and indeed, just caused German instability and resentment.

To be fair though, the uprising in Poznan was probably one of the most well executed uprisings ever - it was cold, calculating and devastatingly effective. Why the leaders of the Warsaw Uprising didn't copy them is entirely beyond me!

I think it would be incredibly dumb. I consider myself a European mixture (immigrants from a number of different places in Europe) which includes polish. Lol what do you think they are going to do have a space for every European nationality? That would be absolutely obsurd.

What's insulting about the fact that Posen was a German, not a Polish city? Documentary evidence, as well as pictures show us clearly that the city was, to all practical extents, a German one. You know, there's a rather large German castle here to remind us of that fact ;)

this is a generalization. Not all PolAms are uneducated and not all Poles living in Poland are educated. Come on.

It's a very interesting statistic though - either the American Polonia are out of touch with what's happening in Poland (very likely) or they're uneducated. I suspect it's a lot to do with the fact that they read about Poland in the English language press - the English press in general being absolutely unable to describe Polish politics!

that is probably the case and there nothing one can do about it since there are many Poles living in Poland who can be described the same way, they are out of touch for different reasons: lack of interest, too busy working and caring for families, tired of the confusing and complicated Polish politics and bickering and so on.


It depends on the group, some read Polish papers and the one I know in Canada are right wings and don't provide an objective view on the Polish politics, some (who probably don't read Polish) would resort to English Polish news- I am not sure how many of those there are, but not to many.

I personally read Polish press from Poland and I believe that those don't provide an objective view of the Polish politics either.
You are assuming and speculating to much in my view while the answer is more complicated then that. Even my family in Poland is confused about the Polish politics ( I was there a couple of months ago), so what are you making your assumptions? On incomplete information? Just my two cents:)

That's the thing - people here are relatively ignorant about what's going on - what hope does someone in America, who doesn't speak Polish, have of understanding what's going on?


There are some sources - but the problem is that many of these English speakers base their opinion on Poland on what they read in the English press - which usually labels (completely wrongly) Kaczynski as a conservative and Komorowski as a liberal. Heck, some of them online seem to believe that Kaczynski stands up for Poland - forgetting that his own brother signed the Lisbon treaty!


Well, it's only what was seen in Poland as a whole - PiS voters are older, less educated and rural while PO voters are younger, more educated and live in cities. Unless of course, the American Polonia are so far removed from Poland that they don't actually mirror what's going on here anymore.

To be fair, my problem with the American Polonia is simply that many of the 3rd generation go on about being Polish, yet none of them speak the language, nor do they know much/anything about Poland itself. Heck, this thread alone proves that many of them know little to nothing about the history of the country, as well as the way that it's virtually impossible to state with confidence that you are in fact 100% TRUE POLISH.

I think it's called picking the right moment to act. War and politics is not a mano-a-mano thing. It's never fair, just like Germn invasion on Pl in 1939 was not fair.

Of course had it not been for a major conflct between Austria, Germany vs Russia, the chances of an independent Poland were slim, but WWI did happen and Poles did took advantage of it. They picked the right moment to act and done a great job. Basically all of Pl borders were settled through an armed conflict. This would not happen if the spirit wasn't there.

Interesting. According to poznan.pl poles costituted about 57% of all inhabitamts of Poznan in 1918. There was also this economical rivalry betwen Poles and Germans prior to WWI that we are being taught in school, that apparently Poles won... Could you expand more on this subject. All educational systems use propaganda and i want to know whether I am in a wrong or not.

I can only go on the evidence from historical pictures - there seems to be little to no trace of Polish businesses at that time. If there was an economical rivalry, why is the old town at the time of 1900-1910ish covered in "German" businesses? Although - I suppose it's possible that Poles adopted "Germanic" identities at the time.

one of my cousins ( not fluent in Polish) but very active in a exchange program where
American students go to poland and Polish come here. he has went to poland quite a few
times and has a very close friend who works with them in the program and is Polish and
Loves his family , has offered my cousin and his family to stay ( and they did) at his familys
home in poland, The Parish they work with also has honored him multiple times, they
support and pay for students and work tirelessly in this program and love what they do.

Well some do it more, some less yet still you have your China, Korea, Thai towns, Little Italy's, St. Patrick parades, villages and towns named after the places of origin from the old country, you name it.( All that genealogy craze is an industry there)

In that respect U.S.A is almost unique and you could call this phenomena part of their culture. So get used to it, because no matter how blue in the face and sore in your finger tips you get, you will still have scores of people over there calling themselves Irish, Polish, Dutch, Jewish and mixes of this and that despite the fact they don't fulfill YOUR PERSONAL CRITERIA for what belonging to a particular nation means.

Personally I have no problem with that although it does crack me up a bit when I mention my mixed Polish-Danish background and a person goes "Oh my grandparents came from Denmark" and then says something about pastry or Na Zdrowie if referred to Polish background. I don't mind that at all, if anything it's just another good reason to connect to people and share something good apart from my pointy erection. So lighten up 'tovaristch', I understand that Zbigniew Brzezinski must have been a thorn in your side (how's that for pointy?) but c'mon, water under the bridge:)

There is such a thing you know. Russian Americans are obssesed with conspiracies that are never true and consume their whole life with them. I've met a couple and they all seem the same. They are truly idiots. They are all obssesed with collecting canned food and water in case of an emergency and when you ask them why they do it they tell some story about the soviet union. All I have to say to them is we are not the friggin soviet union! Anyone who defends their paranoia as smart is ignorant.

The question whether Posen was primarily German or Polish is actually quite easy to answer. All you need to do is to download old address books or census records of Posen from before WW1 (they are available online in Polish archives) and take a closer look at them. The results speak for themselves.

Just admit your ancestry. At least half the people on this forum are not of Polish ancestry. We have other people on this forum who are honest about who they are and have no problem saying that they are Russian, Serbian, German, English, Scottish, etc, so why don't you just admit you're Russian. Polish-Americans did a pretty good job of that themselves during the recent election. It was actually quite widely mentioned here that the Polish-Americans had gone against the rest of the world (including Poland) when it came to the election.

Anyway, most Poles don't regard the Polonia as being Polish. Waving a kielbasa around, talking about Busha's pierogies (the fact that they use the word "pierogies" says it all!) and so on doesn't really endear them to most ordinary Poles.


I have no time for those who go on about being Polish when they -

a) don't speak the language
b) visit for, at best, two weeks every few years
c) complain about the country without living in it

As for ordinary Poles living in Europe, Asia or elsewhere, they're mostly fine. The younger ones in Belarus/Ukraine are a bit strange and not really Polish at all, but the rest are fine. Then again, what would you know, yankee?
