Your favorite USA kiełbasa?

What is your favorite brand of Polish kiełbasa in the USA? I opt for Hamtramck’s Kowalski Sausage Co. But there is Redliński in Buffalo, Chicopee Provision in MA, several good ones in Chicago. How about the big American corporations that also produce something they call “kielbasa”? Some of the latter can be added to things like bigos as a cheaper filler.

I would not feed that crap to a dog.

I'm a Polish who doesn't like kiełbasa. Are there more?

I had an aunt in Detrioit (she died last month) who used to say: 'Ja i kiełbasa to dwie sprzeczności.' So at least there are two of you in the world.

I hope she lived a long and healthy life.

I'm a Polish vegetarian. And I know many more like me, so YES! Definitely there is more of us, non animal eaters, who can live without "kiełbasa":)

One of the surprising things for me in Poland was a kind of chain of milk bars called Green something (I think).

Not gourmet food, but absolutely fine, cheap, nutritious and perfect for a veggie lunch.

I like Kurowski in Chicago. I also like Gilmart's kielbasa. Around 10 years ago I had a contest on Christmas Day to determine the best tasting kielbasa. We had 12 different butchers represented, and around 50 tasters. It was an informal event. Regardless, Donajec's, located on Archer Avenue in Chcago won the contest going away. They received around 20 votes.

I often wonder if the USA has the best varities of kielbasa. When I visited Poland, the kielbasa was good, but not better than I had in the USA. I only had the mass produced versions in Poland, and that certainly can affect tastes and quality. Does Poland have thousands of small butchers making their own interpretations of kielbasa?

Yup. But, the majority of sausages here though are produced by a handful of companies. Most "butchers" unfortunately rip open the same brandname bag of sausages and then hand them or throw them under the glass.

This is true. Which is one of the reasons that old ladies in shops often ask the butcher which factory they came from. The £uków brand is very respected round Warsaw, Kindziuk too, although they're more expensive.

The best kielbasa I've evever eaten come from a farmer in Podlasie who only makes for his family and friends using his own pigs. Probably illegally made, but delicious!

If you are not voting for Noziewski meat products in New Britain, CT It is because you have never tried their kielbasa. Made fresh on site and unbeatable. I challenge all to bring their best kielbasa to New Britain and put it up against Noziewski. Warning: you will lose the contest. 'nuff said.

I miss the kielbasa in RP. Everything I've had thus far in the US doesn't compare but I also don't feel like I've given it a fair try. I gotta hit up the polish delis next time i'm in NJ and see if they're any good.

I buy delicious kielbasa at Gazzolo's Sausage & Deli. It's made fresh on the premises. They are located in San Bernardino, CA. The owner is from Poland :)

In New Jersey: "Piast" in Garfield;
Bratek" in Linden on Wood Avenue and my absolute favorite: Joes Meat Market on Smith St in Perth Amboy. My family's been going there for over 50 years. This place has taken the art of smoking meat to an entirely new level. The kabanosy are special.

A few years ago I would agree with you. But unfortunately I think that they have closed and the place is owned by a new family with a new name. But, New Britain Market (next to bank: I love their Lesna), Podlasie (just off of Broad Street, they make a fantastic Wieskja), Polmart (great store, outstanding Szynkowa (ham kielbasa) and my favorite on the street is Zeleniak (best Ciemna, Goralska and homemade pickles and sledjie). A trip to New Britain Connecticut USA is a trip to Poland, even Pope John Paul II stopped there. There are many Polish eateries on Broad Street and in the immediate area, and the amount of money I spend on Kabanos alone is staggering! BTW off the street a bit is Martin Rosols and I have a craving for their kabanosy right now. Is Goralska the best kielbasa or is it Ciemna, ask me tomorrow and I will tell you it is Lesna.

No doubt --- Stanley's in Toledo, Ohio. I grew up with it and even though I live in California now, I still go back to buy it anytime I find myself anywhere in Michigan or Ohio. It's always worth the drive.

Having grown up in Buffalo, N.Y., I favor Redlinski's. We had three pounds of it shipped here to Texas for Dyngus Day!

Kasia brand products are pretty good. They are sold in many deli's. Most food markets sell both Farmer John & Hillshire brand kielbasa. They're not bad; when fresh, homemade kielbasa isn't available.

Hetman's Deli in Chicago on Belmont is the best I have ever eaten. This a very small shop with a large variety of sausages. I especially enjoy kielbasa goralska and kielbasa chlopska. Gene's Sausage shop across the street is also very good with a larger selection of foods.

Boars Head.

Minor league compare to the delis in Chicagoland area.

Boars Head products are decent but their sausages aren't up to task of local delis

The ancient proverb of bees says - American kiełbasas didn`t even lie next to true Polish kiełbasa.
