a friend who has been brought up in england had recently asked me about domestic violence and in general as he had witnessed a couple fighting who he believed were from poland, i explained like everywhere that this can happen, but actually when i was thinking about it i noticed that when i was growing up in lublin we had difficult times and there was a fair amount of violence ( i mean slaps) in my house, brothers and sisters,,a unties and uncles... it seems different in england?

not at all - more women in the UK die from domestic violence than breast cancer - but that's not saying its all British people we have a very mixed nation, we also have a growing number of children being taken in to care due to violence and abuse but again i will make it clear that we have a large number of none nationals living and working in the UK so it's hard to say what proportion are actually British (English / Welsh & Scots) but as a country the stats are not too good.

i am not so familiar with the uk but thank you for your information, its a sad situation, people need to respect each other, violence is not a choice people have, there should not be any reason to enter this area, unless its an extreme circumstance.

Maybe it happens in England less as there is perhaps less of a culture of keeping things 'in the family'. I think English male relatives would be more likely to 'have a word' *ahem* with the offender.

It is probably caused by economic frustration. When the iron Curtain was still and working, the future for the Poles was limited to having kids! Who wants a family when you earn £100 per month? Also, of course, the Poles have a loving for the 'strong stuff' and it gives them that all important 'Dutch courage'. Sober, the Poles are mediocre but with a little booz, they love to rise to the challenge.

Violence is completely unnatural.

All the wars, misery and death that resulted from religious fighting, colonization, nationalist policies, crusades, theft, jealousy etc, were purely accidental.

i think there was an elemant of choice - someone chose to hit, kill etc

i think wars are more to do with power, jealousy and greed

This figure is completely inaccurate. For the past few years around 120 women and 30 men have been killed by their partners each year in the UK.Unfortunately, deaths from breast cancer are in the thousands.

Agreed there. On the breast cancer awareness website, it says this:

# In 2004, there were 44,659 new cases of breast cancer diagnosed in the UK: 44,335 (99%) in women and 324 (1%) in men.
# Breast cancer causes more than 12,500 deaths each year in the UK

On the Women's Aid, website, they say this:
Did you know that domestic violence kills over two women per week? More key statistics are available in each section of the FAQs.

It might have been a confusion over the amounts of Domestic Violence incidents reported each year... not actual deaths. (2 a week is still 2 too many!!! )

As someone else said above, the UK is a multi-cultural society, and as such, the figures might be distorted a bit, in that it only deals with crimes committed here, not who they're caused by. For instance, if someone kills their wife, then it's treated as a murder. But that murder might be part of an "honour killing" which is seen as "acceptable" by certain people in certain immigrant communities... and yes, being very careful not to say ALL...

Saying that, yes, undoubtedly there is domestic violence committed here by British on British too. I don't think now though, that women are as likely to tolerate it as they did in the past. Just my view though.
