koło jest większe niż kwadrat.

kwadrat jest większy niż koło.

Why does większy become większe when the two objects are switched? Is it because the kwadrat has four corners or something?

no, because of the feminine/masculine/neutral thingy (how is it called, gender?):

kwadrat is masculin, so 'większy'
koło is neutral, so 'większe'
