Advice Needed - Buy or Rent Car for a Month before I start my new job?

We're shipping our cars from the USA > Gdynia August 11 and fly into WAW on August 8. I'm assuming our container will be all set first full week of Sept. (6th through 9th) - its being delivered to our new home in PL.

I'm debating if we should buy a cheap car around 2000-4000PLN to use for the month and then resell OR if we should rent a car. Lowest I've found so far is 80PLN all-inclusive from LeCar (includes vat, insurance, etc.) I realize buying a used car in Poland is quite an endeavor especially buying it online even if I have someone on the ground can test drive - still I don't want to end up with a bad clutch or tranny which will require money to fix if we decide to visit the seaside for a week. At the same time I have no idea what registration and applicable taxes would run for a car I'd want to drive for a couple months and then resell. I also feel as though dropping 2400 PLN for a month long rental is also a waste but really would like a car before I begin my new job. Any help much appreciated. Cheers,

You won't be able to register the car until you've completed the residency paperwork - so forget about that option.

Residency paperwork will be pretty clear cut (wife has Polish ID card and we both have PL passports). Worst case scenario we have someone in her family register it on their name.

Oh, in this case, go ahead and buy something :)

But to be honest - most cars in that price range will have already been destroyed by Polish roads and not worth the hassle. Certainly, anything under 5000PLN is likely to be a bit of a wreck - and it's not easy to find a good second-hand car in Poland.

Do you know what and how much costs are associated with buying a used car in Poland? Registration? Taxes?

I totally agree with delphiandomine. Most cars in that price range will probably be death traps in all honesty. I would consider the rent option as in the end it could prove to be cheaper!

I disagree. There is plenty of cars in 500-1000 PLN price range, good enough to drive for a month or so.Last time I visited PL I bought myself a maluch for 300 PLN to drive around town, didn't bother to put it on my name (to be honest I didn't even bother to get this new DL and I still have the old 1991 issued one),drove it for a 2 months then junked it before going back to US.But my situation was probably different than the OP because I wasn't going to make any longer trips with this maluch.Driving a maluch is a lot of fun and I would love to have one in the US.
