I am coming to study at the University in Wroclaw and have some questions about employment

I plan on studying in Wroclaw, my tuition and flat will already be paid for, but I am going to be looking for a job for extra spending and what not. I am taking the year long preparatory course for nine months and then planning on taking my major in Polish. Are there opportunities for students to get jobs?

get to know Polish students (preferably from your own faculty) and offer them to teach them English (target the girls mostly you know why) - after some getting around you will also see what are the temp or part time opportunities for students in Wrocław (some fields of study have opportunities, for most fields of study you will have to initially look for a job outside the field)

Alright, I don't have confidence in my teaching abilities, but I could give it a shot. I am not necessarily looking for a job in my field, any job would be fine. I have only ever held jobs as an office and kitchen assistant.

archimeteor: Are there opportunities for students to get jobs? Are you sure it's a wise idea to work during an intensive Polish course? I know a couple of people who have done them - and if you expect to be good enough to study Polish at the university level, you won't have time to work during the course.

I actually didn't know what to expect. I might just plan on working a lot of extra hours before I leave home. Thank you for letting me know, the last thing I want is to completely overwhelm myself. I haven't actually talked to anyone in Wroclaw about it, I just applied online, do you think the 9 month course will really prepare someone for a major in Polish? I don't want to set myself up to fail. I have been practicing Polish for about an hour every night, but just basic stuff.

It might, but you'll need to put the hours in with self-study - the course itself won't be enough. And a lot will depend on you - with languages, it's impossible to say if you'll be good enough or not. Bear in mind that you'll also need "academic" Polish - it won't be enough to simply be able to use every day Polish.

you first need to learn the basics of the language - the alphabet, phonetics and gradually the grammar - the course will provide most of the material you would need for that end - and to be able to actually study in Polish you will have to read a lot (to get around the higher and academic Polish) and talk a lot in Polish - lot's of work I'd imagine - not to get depressed by it I suggest you start looking for some sport or other activity that can 'clear' your mind when you make a break - going to the mountains and skiing are good choices in my view (Wrocław is not that far from mountains) and there are even a couple of ski-resorts in those
mountains

your up for a culture shock for a start so don't press yourself into anything at first - getting around things and places is a challenge enough at first

I think I was being pretty unrealistic thinking I could take a major in Polish right away. Does the university have advanced Polish you can take after the nine month course?
