How is the living standard in Poznan? Does 5200 PLN enough for a decent living?

Hi all!

I just get a teaching job offer in Poznan, 5200 PLN gloss salary.

I am a super newbie in poland and is now super looking forward to start this job. (Literately: Cant wait to ship myself to Poznan right now!)

But after receiving advises from family and friends, plus some quick researches on this forum, seems 5200PLN(before tax) is not a fairly good amount for managing a decent living standard in poland, not to mention I still have to pay for student loan every month, around £200.

I am currently searching for a city centre room on websites like spareroom and gumtree, i noticed that rooms offered from english speaking landlord started from 1500PLN....up to sky high.

Kinda confusing now....I am asking myself 100 times "is it worth to take this offer?" "Can I manage a decent(not a luxury one) living with this salary?"

Little bit abt myself:

Your offer, quite frankly, sounds too good to be true based on Your qualifications and what people ( expats included ) get paid in Poland.

Act carefully.

You'll be fine on 5200PLN gross as long as you don't run a big car. Can't you defer SL payments until you earn more? Good luck.

It doesn't bother us. It's more that we find it rather worrying that someone can graduate from an English university, yet make more than ten mistakes in a post as short as your first one.

In response to your question: it's more than the UK minimum wage, yet many people in Poland earn half of that. You'll be better off than you would have been while working in a shop in the UK.

Ask yourself a simple question, even if you have to cut corners in PL, how will the job look on your CV, when you apply for positions in the UK?

It is internet talk, I find it so anal that you english teachers, feel it necessary to bring up - grammar, spelling mistakes when someone is asking questions on this forum.

I'm not an English teacher, or any kind of teacher for that matter. But I was always near the top of the class in English, and I'm from a multilingual, non-British family. I wouldn't claim to have perfect English, though.

You clearly haven't been in Warsaw for very long if you don't realise that Poles are notorious for correcting even the slightest grammatical mistakes!

Some of us were educated before the "liberal" dumbing-down of UK education took place, so it's hardly surprising that we pick up on these errors. I left school at 16, went to college not university (well, not until much later anyway) yet a *graduate* has poorer English than I have - especially as the media keeps telling us that people like me (from families where English is not the first language) are held back in education, and particularly in English!

It's not "internet talk" - many of the posters here use internet language, yet their posts still make sense. If it was someone who admitted that they came from an Asian village I wouldn't have commented on their English (mistakes would be expected), but someone who claims to have graduated from a UK university??

Doesnt even Mcdonalds pay better in UK?

They do, but she must want to live in Poland for some bizarre reason. Each to their own though! lol

No I have not, so I apologize, although my wife is Polish and graduated from the English dept of Philology ( Warszawa university). I bought my first flat in Warsaw in 1993, turned up in Warsaw for the first time in Dec 1990, so I guess you could say, I am straight off the boat.

I just get a teaching job offer in Poznan, 5200 PLN gloss salary.

You might want to be careful about this - I'm almost willing to bet you that it's some sort of scam. You might get here and find that they can't give you 5.2k, but only 2.5k - I just don't believe that any Polish business would give you that sort of money given your experience/qualifications.

If you want, you can send me a private e-mail to office@lindenia and I can double check for you - I live in Poznan :)

I am going to teach interactive design (not english nor ballet...lol)and I cant find much information regarding creative/design/new media art industry in poznan.

There's not much of an industry and a lot of graduates - that's why I'm very suspicious as to where this offer has come from. 5.2k gross is well above the normal salary for this sort of thing...

Well, I suppose if she doesn't get enough, she can always dress up like some blachara and get a part in some dodgy local hip-hop video or something lol

Native speakers with little or NO experience teaching English can earn that amount NO PROBLEM. Of course you would have to put in the hours.

Agreed 100%. There are all to many, especially in the provinces, getting by on half that.

Why? You do the math. A native speaker can on average earn 50zl ( this is an average based on personal experience. In some cases 40zl in others 60 + ) per teaching hour. Times that by a 30-40 hour week. I personally would not take a job for less than 40 zl p/h unless hours were guaranteed, then I'd except 35 zl p/h.

Just saying............

And this is where your 'argument' falls into thousands of tiny pieces. Try multiplying that by 20 - 25 at a pinch and then subtracting tax and ZUS.

You only have 20-25 hours? Where are you working? I'm turning down work as I have too much in Trojmiasto. I guess you are only working for 1 school. There are hundreds out there.

Doha actually, and managing not teaching.

However I've been in EFL long enough to know thay 25 hours is the maximum. Above that, standards drop to the level of some Japanese 'ticket school' or some place churning out Callan or spooling out Headway to the undemanding..

And I assume you're paying tax and ZUS.

Teach hardly any Callan and if I do it's quite relaxed and not at all like the ROBOT way of doing Callan. I teach mostly at companies between 8-16.00 and schools in the evenings.100 % legit, everything paid. I can understand only getting 25 hours max if working at only one school but why limit yourself? I get around 25/26 hours from 1 school and in the evenings work at a second school which is another 12 hours give or take, and a guaranteed 6 hours on Saturdays with another school. I have a friend who has hardly any hours but I know that's because he's lazy and won't get off his arse to ask around the many schools around here. Maybe it's a "right place at the right time" kind of thing. Got another friend who's got 50 hours plus a week, but a lot of those are private students who come to his home.

There is only one way of doing Callan. It is scripted. Period.

Doesn't leave much time for preperation, making materials, testing etc, does it?

Gloss? Advises? Researches? You are NOT going to be teaching English here, sorry! No native speaker with half a brain would write like that. Pay for student loan? Are you Peter Kay's good friend? ;)

Get outta here and stick to being a nob jockey!
