What Jobs are there in Poland for an Englishman besides teaching english?

Im not too fond of living in my country at the moment. does anyone have any information on jobs i could do in Poland that doesnt include teaching? Anyone got any stories on moving to poland and securing work any info on technnical side of things permit etc... Much apprieciated :-D

Hate to say it Glim but there is NOTHING! I been in this position here in Poland for five years, I speak fluent Polish, educated to degree level and because I know nothing about business, banking or IT am basically f*cked in Polska. Still here because of my wife but jeez it's awful having nothing to occupy ones time. I've even tried asking in pubs and restaurants as I'm willing to work for crap money just to have something to do but nobody wants a foreigner working in their establishment, in fact many people get annoyed that you're trying to take jobs away from Poles. Only real option is if you have any money you can start your own business here. Sorry about the 'moaning' mate!

its a shame.. my GF gets run down occasionally about people in the UK complaining about 'poles taking our jobs' in massive numbers, but its the same in Poland but without the same amount of numbers.. Shame, such a beautiful country, i'd love to live there...

What's your background? I know quite a few Journalists / Writers who work for English language publications in Poland.

Well, this is an added complication. I dont have anything on paper that would demonstrate an ability to work as a writer for a publication. I have bucket loads of enthusiasm and a willingness to learn and learn quickly. Not enough to secure a job considering the current economic and cultural situation in Poland. What about Norway??

If you spoke a little Polish, you know, with a funny accent and amusingly twisted vocabulary, you could try to make a career in TV. There are a lot of foreigners, Germans, Brits, French, who take part in popular talk shows, commercials, programmes about Europe. Do you know Kevin Aiston, a British firefighter, married to a Pole, who became a media star in Poland? he is even in Wikipedia, sorry, only Polish version.

Hi, I have also fallen in love with a polish lady. We are talking about moving there next year. I am a restaurant manager and chef, also have building skills, after reading you blog it seems that it is very hard for an Englishman to get work in Poland. My current Chefs said i could earn good money and find a job 'No problem'.
I employed polish in the Uk but it sounds hard for an Englishman to get employed in Poland is this really true ??

Yes.

Anyone who tells you getting a job as a chef will be 'no problem' is lying or spreading false rumor.

From what I understand and have seen anything other than English teaching will require you to work for a foreign company and be assigned to Poland by that company. Moving to Poland and expecting to find a job of that sort by passing out CVs and networking is a pipe dream. Of course if you knew the right person very well like a restaurant owner I guess it is possible...albeit slim.

Work in Poland is the same in 2008 as most places in the world. The market will pay you based on need. If you have developed a skill that is marketable you can get a job anywhere in the world. If you are a generalist you will be a worker, office, physical or what have you. That is the way of the world. In the States or the UK its the same. Sure the payscale will seem higher but maybe by 20% at most if you factor in cost of living. But if you develop yourself you can get rich in Poland like anywhere.

Fact remains it is not easy nor even likely a Chef is going to move to Poland and find a job he likes.

Nor can someone who is a generalist come here and get a job in an office or as a laborer just like in any country.

Yes there are some opportunities for some people. But to tell someone they can move here and will be able to sort something for sure is dishonest. Poles will hire Poles first and in many cases have to by law. Yes this is the same all over but goes to the point he is looking for a very very rare chance.

Lots of people more here with girls...as he is planning...and then give up or teach English as they can't find anything else. It is not so simple as 'working hard'.

I think a trained, qualified, experienced chef can work anywhere in the world. short of that I bet there are many IT jobs available. but if you are not qualified in any specific field than english teaching is the most viable option. you can try it you might like it. for years I thought I would hate it but I actually really enjoy it.

Cheffing here can earn great money, If he looks hard enough, language is no problem esp uin krakow.(any ordering and liasing with suppliers can be done with the de partie etc......there are a lot of places in krakow that would SNAP up a qualified chef.

Also jobs in IT..poland is sadly way behind in IT /Experience compared with the rest of Europe.....Web design/Flash/Photoshop skills are in big demand here (krakow)

when i went to kraków i saw lots of people sat outside shops with banners advertising for the shop they were outside of. They didn't speak at all, and most had their ipods plugged in. does anyone know the name of the job i'm talking about? i imagine any englishman could do that!

Dear foreigners! You are all very welcome here in Poland, but if you are looking for a good job (excluding teaching English), you have to learn Polish. Of course, there are some international companies here in Warsaw and you can try there... however, speaking Polish in Poland may be very useful ;-) I know that our language isn't easy (I'm a teacher), but if you want to stay here for some time, you just have to learn it...
