Hi all,

I'm currently living in Denmark and studying Computer Science here at the university. I am considering moving to Poland once I finish my bachelor degree to take my masters degree in Warsaw, as I have a girlfriend in Warsaw.

Does anyone know how the quality of the educations at Polytechnika Warszawska is or how it compares to DK/more western countries?
I have spent about 6 weeks in Warsaw this year and it surprises me how bad the Polish youth is at English in general. What are your thoughts about me coming to Warsaw to study, not knowing Polish?
If I decided to do it, I would take language courses, but I believe it will take quite some time before I can understand/speak Polish.

Best regards
Kenneth

Hello

kfuglsang:

It's true that English is known on a rather mediocre level in Poland among youth (although there is a lot of exceptions from it), but at least the knowledge of English among Polish youth is very common (actually there are very VERY little young people who don't know any English) and it's rather hard to find someone who don't understand a word.

I've never studied in Warsaw co I can't help you concerning your studies, but on a other note I've studied in Krakow and saw and met a lot of foreign students and can assure you that you don't have to know any Polish in the big cities (smaller one's is a different tale) to easily communicate, in most cases only English is more than enough, and if not English then German or Russian could sometimes do.

With Regards.

They say that PW is the best in Poland so you don't have many choices if here.
Mind that you will be in one of the most vibrant city in PL.

I just came back after 4 weeks in Warsaw. One of the last days I was in Warsaw, I had to buy a busticket since the one I had was expired.
I went to four different gas stations / shops and was unable to buy a new one :/ I even tried to point at my old ticket and the employee would just say "nie".
This episode was a little frightening to me because it is such a simple thing and yet I was unable to manage in that situation.

I found that my girlfriend's friends was uncomfortable at best while speaking English and soon came back to speaking Polish together.

It pleases me to know that you believe otherwise Andrei. I know a tourist-level of German so I have that as a backup, although I am unsure how beneficial it is in Warsaw (probably more in Poznan).

my advice: stop complaining about others not speaking English but look at yourself and start learning Polish...

This is the exact reason why I wrote I will admit to Polish language courses once I get there. The reason I asked how I did is that I dont expect to be able to speak Polish from the first day I get there and preferably I would start studying within the first few months after moving to Warsaw.

Speak often, read as much as you can, and try writing. If you learn a bit of Polish, try posting to some Polish language forums and see what kind of response you receive. :)
