Which university (erazmusem)? Poznań, Lublin, Krosno and Białsko-Biała.

I would like to ask you to give me some advice about where should I go to study polonistyka. I intend to spend my next semester in Poland with scholarship, and we have several places to aim. I am thinking of Poznań, Lublin, Krosno and Białsko-Biała. The problem is that I don't know these schools. I know all these towns are really nice, but not which university is better there.
My actual favourite is Poznań, because I heard that UAM is the oldest university of these and it has a proven quality.

Teachers said not to go to Kraków, because there's too much foreigners there.

Lublin... there's a catholic school there, but I haven't heard much about it...

If someone attended/attends one of these universities, please tell me the experiences, opinions.

It's not a bad choice, but the accomodation that they put exchange students into frankly sucks. The Polish department is in a rather nice old building in Poznan - but the quality of the programme is rather poor, from what I've heard.

UAM is one of the best universities in Poland, Catholic univ in Lublin is quite good, not sure which schools from other 2 towns but most probably they are far behing, however this is about general reputation of the school, not necessarily quality of the programme you are interested in.

If you would like to treat the place as a travel base, then go for Poznan or Bielsko-Biala.
Krosno is a really small town and it is rather not known for their Uni. They have rather branches of Universities from bigger cities. But I don't know what is your taste, maybe calm little town is something you are looking for...
From "party" point of view probably Poznan and maybe to smaller degree Lublin.

The most important for me is the school itself, environment is less important since I suppose all those towns are nice. :-)

Yes, I think teachers meant it's harder to concentrate on using Polish in everyday life in a university which is full of foreign students... However many said that Polish language courses are the best in Kraków. So... hard to decide... :-)

Leonis: Poznań, Lublin, Krosno and Białsko-Biała Poznan - a respected university in a biggish city. If you have a chance go. Lublin (either university) is good too. Lublin is cheaper to live in than Poznan and a little less 'western'. Also a nice place. Krosno is a one-horse town, and Bielsko a backwater (but near the Czech border).

I've never really heard of the universities in Krosno and Bielsko-Biala (not to say they're bad, I just haven't heard)

I've heard different things about the Catholic university in Lublin (and the town itself).

Poznan is known as having the best language programs in Poland (though less so for Polish for foreigners) though from what I hear they've gotten better in recent years. I haven't heard anything bad about the Polish for Polish students program.

Poznan is generally more used to dealing with foreigners and it's also a good base for travel (easy to Warsaw, Berlin though connections to Krakow aren't good). dephiandomine is right about bad housing though (and the local housing market is not cheap).

Poznan also has a Hungarian dept (I don't know if that's an attraction or not).

mafketis: I've heard different things about the Catholic university in Lublin (and the town itself). Lublin has changed a lot over the last few years, that probably accounts for the different opinions about the place. Personally it is my weekend-away destination of choice.

Lublin is a great city for students and lost of women here. I love Lublin. Been here 3 years.

I was born in Krosno. It's a small town with nice old city but the university is thought to be second category. In my opinion Poznań will be best choice.

The Polish filology course is fine if you're into heavy going stuff such as Old Polish - on an academic level, it's very rigorous. But it may not be a good choice for Erasmus.

The Polish for Foreigners courses are still dire from what I've heard recently.

Leonis: It seems I cannot pull a boner. Poznań and Lublin are both good choices. I've spent two weeks at the Lublin Catholic University Summer School. That's been three years ago, but Lublin now is also a candidate for the European City of Culture, so there are lots of events focused around that -- might be an easy way to socialise. :)
