Is the last sound of the Polish 3 phonetically more like "gshe?" (with a soft g, like in genre)
or "Gshi?" (with a soft, genre)

I know the phonetics are not correct, but is the end more of an ee sound, or an ih sound?

Thanks!!

You both wrote them with the example "genre"

As far for pronunciation.. it's more like Tché

Thanks!

So is the end of the sound like the "ay" in say?

No it's like a French "é" Can't think of an English word with it at the moment.. It's like the "é" in "Bon appétit" or "Béarnaise sauce"

Thanks...Sounds like it might "almost" be like the a in say, but short without the "y" dipthong...?
Like Chante (if there was an accent on the last e)?

Thanks again....really trying to get it right!

no, it's not, unless as in 'adultery' pronounced with a heavy Polish accent :), no kidding, must be a local thing or something, but i heard that the pronounciation of the last 'y' can change. the most simillar to Polish 'y' i heard in an English program was in 'Minister, Minister', where the speak with this posh sort of an accent.

that's why the best way to learn pronunciation of any word and in any language is through : listen (native speaker) and repeat

go to http://www.ivo.pl/index.php?option=com_ivonaonline&Itemid=38 and type in trzy in the little window and click on "odczytaj" and a voice will pronounce it for you.

make sure you pick the Polish speaking Ewa or Jacek

Start with putting your tongue towards your upper teeth somehow almost between the upper row of your teeth and the lower row like when you pronounce the english th. Contrary to speaking the th while pronouncing trzy the front part of the tongue is not free in your mouth but pressed on the palatine right behind your upper teeth. From this basic position your click the tongue backwards, its tip showing upwards and moving backwards.
I hope that helped a little bit ;)

lisa,

Do you want 3,3,3 or 333

Try this: 'chi' as in chips.

lisa,

yeden, dwa, t-shi, ch-stairy, pea-en-ch, sh-es-ch, she-ed-em, osh-em, dz-ev-inch, dz-esh-inch.

3 = you have to put 't' from tug in front of 'shi' from ship.
