Articles she's forgotten that you can refer to the singular in the plural when it's ambiguous andyou want to avoid the awkward he/she type question.

Am I on the right thread?

I've found Poles to be somewhat outspoken. A bit blunt. On the other hand, I'm the kind of Brit who, if you stand on my toe, will say. "I'm so terribly sorry. It seems my toe is in the way of yours. Would you mind terribly removing your foot?"

Overpoliteness is no good either.

Everyone is always on the right thread. There are no wrong threads here. Even if you think you're on the wrong one, you're still on the right one.

My Polish girlfriend is rude (sort of!). She also doesn't like giving tips to restaurant staff and taxi drivers! Is this typical?? I always thought the Spanish were the rudest nation until now!

Yes. The approach in Poland is that people should be paid sufficiently, without having to rely on handouts. In some cases giving a tip may be construed as an offense.

guttersnipe:

Podczas gdy ja byłem w Polsce, ja pomyslałem że Polski ludzi sa wszystki bardzo szorstki

Did you meet wszystki polski ludzi?

I neatly sidestepped the problem by giving her all my money...

Restaurant and bar staff expect a tip, but only because they've been to the UK or some such place and done the same job there. (possibly)

Taxi drivers don't expect a tip. I'm not about to start a fashion, so I only tip sometimes.

I disagree, in Poland they expect a tip nearly everywhere now. Taxi drivers expect one too.

Poles are thrifty on tiping I must agree

Expect a tip, I'm not so sure about that. It's not necessarily a given that this will be the case.

The biggest problem I have with some Poles is defensiveness. Many are touchy and all too willing to lock horns. A moan is always just around the corner too.

Hmmm what can i say?!
sth about polish people and good behoviour: polish language do not demand polite words in many cases.
U have to just say/ask sentecne in proper way and/or with good intonation.
If people use polite words they use slang or/and shortcuts of the proper words.
example of the phone call:
-Siemka.(slang;jak sie masz; How are u)
-Cze. (shortcut; czesc; Hi)
-Co slychać/jak leci. (idiom;expression; literacy: What sound/how its flight;
How u do/feel etc)
-A wporzo/ok. (shortcut; w porzadku/jest ok; literacy: in order; im ok/its ok etc)
-Sluchaj, czy moglbys mi pozyczyc notatki, wpadne wieczorem. (Literacy:Listen, can u borrow me notes, ill drop in in the evening)
-Nie ma sprawy. (literacy: There is no case; Ok, thats no problem)
-Ok dzieki. Narka. (slang; dziekuje;narazie; thanks. see u later)

Now sth about poeple im working with, brits.
I cannot complain but in some cases, YES!!!
Language, language and one more time language!!! Everyone is swearing all the time and do not bother that they will be punished for that by their managers.
Its just a warning.
many times i saw someone that belched in a presence of a customers. And the louder and longer its last the more fun. Ofcourse customers unhapy from that behaviour, walk away and i dont have to say how they looked at the "customer assistant"!!!.
I never thought that people can behave like that.
Yes, good manners they have. Thnk u, please etc but what if someone is asking me few times 'how r u' within an hour?!
So how i must feel when i here those words, only God knows how many times, within 9 hours.
I dont mind if someone ask me about my health/day etc but lots of brits are over-using polite words.
Once one woman asked why they are asking how u feel/ are u ok, etc. Do they really want to know that, care about someone.
Answer was shocking!!!
Automatic use!!! nothing else. Who cares how u feel, if your aunt just died its just "automatic use" part of culture.

I gave only some examples but everyone is diferent.
It doesnt mean that if one person is wonderful or extremly rude the other XX milions is the same in whole Britain/Poland.
